Last Night - "You finally understand"

I've only been spinning off and on for the last year but for the last few months I have dedicated a lot more time.

Starting out, I would try to force mixes or cut to the next track too soon. I was a real train wreck! Now, I can just feel when two tracks make sense together or compliment each other. While listening to a track, I don't have to guess which track to play next because I know my music so well now that it's like instinct.

During this time I got so frustrated with beat matching, beat counting, phrasing, layering, finding my sound, that I wanted to quit.

Last night.... all that frustration was worth it. I spun until 2AM and was extremely late for work. My boss thought I was out late partying with some women, I wish!

Anyway, during my late night session, everything I was trying to learn and do came together and finally made sense.

I mixed these two tracks, experimenting with when and how to transition, until I gave myself chills.

When my room mate(a DJ for 6 years), got home at 1AM, I showed him the mix and he just smiled, slapped me on the back and said, "You finally understand."

This feeling of understanding feels sooooo good.

Well, I just wanted to share that with you strangers and friends since no one here at work would understand. I trust that you will.

Any one else experience this understanding?

Peace,

Yeah right, I've heard you spin. You're just too modest.

The way I see it, you have already past this point. You look calm, cool and in control when you are spinning.

Nah, I only sound like I'm in control because I have one CD that I just let play for an hour and act like I'm mixing up there. Kinda like Dave does. LOL!

Seriously though. What I have found out is once you start getting confident in what you are doing, you feel more comfortable in the booth or wherever the decks are than anywhere else. Sort of like what athletes call 'the zone'. You start to focus and nothing else matters at that point.

Pretty much true, I don't get nervous like I used to 4 years ago... I used to get so nervous it would take 4 or 5 tracks before I started to chill.. now I just go up there and play whatever I feel like playing that jumps into my head at the time... :)

That's what I was trying to convey. I'm just happy and proud that I'm no longer train wrecking. Last night was the first time I felt like I was in 'the zone'.

Yes, the same thing happened to me. :) Your story in a nutshell pretty much describes the who passion + perseverence thing I've preached in the past. Frustrations will occur, and sometimes we may get heavily discouraged, but if you persevere..we will get much better than we initially dreamed that we could.

Stick with it man, your'e on the right track. :)
