I remember a while back we were talking about XM or Sirrius, which one is better and what-nto... and a merger speculation came about but they went as "not happening"..

I saw this today ..

XM, Sirius announce merger
The two satellite radio operators will combine in a merger of equals, leaving Parsons as chairman and Karmazin as CEO.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Rivals XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio announced Monday they would enter into a merger of equals, creating a satellite radio giant.

As part of the deal, XM Chairman Gary Parsons would remain chairman of the combined firm, while Sirius' Mel Karmazin would assume the role of CEO.

The deal would also provide listeners a substantially wider variety of programming. Sirius is currently home to shock jock Howard Stern, while XM boasts a number of programs hosted by such high-profile entertainers as Bob Dylan.

Speculation has run rampant on Wall Street about a possible tie-up between XM (Charts) and Sirius (Charts) since the beginning of the year.

I saw this too and think it could be really good. No more arguing or having to decide on a service, but get the best of both companies. I just hope they don't kill anything I listen to that I like on Sirius.

i thought this would never happen b/c of a monopoly...

but expect prices to jump significantly... probably at least double...

but ill take the Sirrus sports and the XM EDM... :D .. im happy :)

This is what I'm afraid of. I really don't want to pay more, but I expect that they will jack the price up significantly.

this is not a done deal. the FCC could nix the deal based on that this is some sort of monopoly.

Yeah I heard about that too.

I don't understand exactly how monopolies work though tbh...isn't FPL a monopoly? As there is no other power company in the state or does this only work on a country scale.

FPL is south florida only, i believe out in tampa, orlando and north florida there is another power company.

Maintaining or Creating a Monopoly

While it is not illegal to have a monopoly position in a market, the antitrust laws make it unlawful to maintain or attempt to create a monopoly through tactics that either unreasonably exclude firms from the market or significantly impair their ability to compete. A single firm may commit a violation through its unilateral actions, or a violation may result if a group of firms work together to monopolize a market....

I read an article that there is a restriction that says the two can't merge for a monopoly. But, the government will re-visit and possibly change the rule of monopoly in satellite radio. Xm & Sirius can argue they don't have a monopoly with new technologies emerging like HD radio.

is this the article? http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/20/b...gin&oref=slogin

...A merger would require antitrust approval from the Justice Department and would have to be considered in the public interest by the Federal Communications Commission.

Under their operating licenses, XM and Sirius were prohibited from ever owning each other’s license. The commission could waive that rule. But critics pointed to its rejection of the merger of the satellite television broadcasters EchoStar and DirecTV four years ago.

Questioned last month about a possible Sirius-XM merger, the F.C.C. chairman, Kevin J. Martin, initially appeared to be skeptical, but later said that if such a deal were proposed, the agency would consider it.

In a statement yesterday, Mr. Martin acknowledged that the F.C.C. rule could complicate a merger but said the commission would evaluate the proposal. “The hurdle here, however, would be high,” he said.

The proposed merger, first reported yesterday by The New York Post, promises to be a test of whether regulators will see a combination of XM and Sirius as a monopoly of satellite radio communications or whether they will consider other audio entertainment, like iPods, Internet radio and HD radio, to be competitors....
