recently i have decided i want to go to grad school. at first i was going to keep my choices limited to nyc, but the more i started thinking about it the more i realized how much i would rather go abroad again. in any event, i came across the u of cape town's website, and i must say i am rather intrigued.
unfortunately, s africa does not have a forum on here, however i do remember reading an issue of UK mixmag where they discussed the edm scenes in cities throughout the world, and i specifically remember somewhere in said country being listed as an edm hot spot. would this be cape town?? i should think it would be, only because from what little i do know about south africa, cape town is a bit more cosmipolitan than say j-burg.
not that i am looking to base my decision on where i get my master's degree on how spectacular the raves are, but i certainly do not want to cut electronic music out of my life completely. i need to be somewhere where parties at least occur on an often enough basis, especially during grad school... we're talkin about stress release here people!
other than that, if anyone who reads this has any input at all about south africa, edm related or not, i would greatly appreciate it as i don't know who else to question about it for the time being.
also, if you frequent other cities on the ta boards, u might bump into this message more than once... i need input.

I think it was Decembers mixmag that profiled South Africa for partying. All I remember is they said it is a very cheap place to party. dont forget world cup 2010, that'd be great to be there |

ahhhhhhhhh south africa, just mentioning that country brings a warm fuzzy feeling for me. God i miss home. I used to live in JHb for about 13 years before i moved to Canada. I have been to Durban and Cape Town several times and have also had the opportunity to party in these magnificant cities. To put party'ng aside for a moment let me just say that Cape Town is beautiful and if you are seriously thinking of moving there it will be an experience you will NEVER forget. Now as for the party'ng, well thats exactly what they do! South Africa was once a Dutch colony and till this day is currently very influenced by the British. This is evident in the way they speak, to the cars they drive and the same thing goes for the club scene. Its a very EDM based culture as opposed to US/Canada which is run by Hip-hop, so you will find an abundance of like minded individuals to party the night away. Cape Town draws alot of international talent and has major parties under Gatecrasher, Ministry of Sound and other British labels. One famous club that you should definately check out is called SYNERGY. Its Huge and has bi- weekly events hosting international DJ's. Personally i have not been back to South Africa since i left three years ago so im not really up to date with the scene, however i do have a alot of friends that could possibly show you around.
Let me know if you have any further questions whether clubbing related or not and i will gladly help you out. |

hmm, south africa,
i been there a good number of times, i say stay the away from Joburb, its a big city, bigger then toronto, but the crime rate is bigger as well.
as for cape-town, thats my favourite city in the world. the beaches there are amazing, the women will make you pop a boner as soon as you get off the plane.
as for the parties. they are lots of fun. toronto has way more parties then cape-town, but you will in no way go bored on the weekend there. another club that good to check out would be dockside.
as for universities in south africa. University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is the best university in the country. it is internationaly recognised.
the university of capetown is another really good one. id only recomend those two. i have a number of friends that are studying at the university of capetown and they love it. ive been to the campus a couple times and i was impressed. its on the base of table mountain and has some really good views. |

When you need signs like the one below in a country, decitions to live there become very simple.

(The picture btw was taken by my coworker who's there for 3 weeks.) |
