Growing into your sound...or just maturing?
View this Thread in Original format

I dunno whats been going on with me recently, but i think im either growing into the sound i like or just maturing. for example currently im loving Satoshi Tomiie's livesets, yet about 2 years ago i heard a liveset from him and couldn't listen to it for more than 2 mins. the same with Holden, now im fuken lovin his too. i hardly listen to trance anymore but i still love it. still love hard trance too. but i was wondering do you just grow into one sound (i.e. house/trance/DnB/breaks)or do we evolve into diff styles at diff times never staying on one style of edm? i constrict it to edm because its such a huge field of music.

I have gone through the same thing. It's funny that you talk about Satoshi, because that is a good example for me to. I had heard of him a couple of years ago when I was only spinning trance and just starting out. Didn't know much about him and what I heard didn't interest me at all. But, last March I went to see one of his shows here in Dallas and was just blown away by his sound. This coincided with me starting to dabble in other genres. I never wanted to play progressive house or any other genre and now find myself playing prog as much as I do trance. I can't put my finger on what happened. But I don't really think you can call it maturing as much as you can just broadening in your music taste. Trance sometimes gets a bad rap for a number of reasons and some think it has the least amount of artistic value in relation to EDM. I disagree. I think that the person's true appreciation for the genre can give any of them equal respect. To make a short story long:haha: , you and I probably think the same in that trance was our first love, but we still need to know what else is out there. That's a good thing.

i think most djs start out playing trance. i know i did and most other club djs i talk to say the same thing. you start there, move into progressive and end up in house - these are the guys playing the clubs. s lot of people stay in progressive. its good to get some diversity

I was stuck in trance...then Four.2 & that August '05 30-min promo came along, and I haven't looked back since :D. Even now, though, my tastes are constantly evolving. I wouldn't say changing, because it's not like I'm bouncing around between genres...just going deeper & deeper into the world of music that's just of higher & higher quality....IMHO.

Please don't tell me I'm moving to playing just house. That would make me frown.

Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Brittney Spears with a shaved head.

W3rd.

Good thing you brought this up rapfiend. I also experienced the same thing too and am still in the process of seeking other forms of electronica, simply because everytime I hear something from someone I didn't like 2 years ago, it's now gotten to the point where I find myself hitting the "repeat track" button on the track and/or set. A good example, being Armin V. Buuren. When he brought out Boundaries of Imagination, I just could not bear the sound of annoying synths and high pitched keys, not to mention that back in the day I used to be a hardcore punk and almost started a band with some friends from high school. Then slowly, I noticed I always went back and played that track again that caught my attention the first time, for some odd reason. Soon I found myself enjoying his tracks even more.

Same thing with Junkie XL. I always used to think Junkie was waaayyy too mainstream for me and that I just couldn't adjust to his sound. Not until 2005 (Armin/Junkie/Oakenfold gig) did I realize that this guy had a potential to create a variety of sounds that sooner or later would grab a hold of me, especially his remixes. Moreover, Gabriel & Dresden is one duo I hated for the life of me. But then I knew that these guys always threw something in there that made me wanna dance and jam to. That set they played at Bar-Rio 3 weeks ago blew me away. Not only was it the first time I'd seen them live (from which I purposely always avoided their gigs), but it was the first time I knew that these artists and dj's in the world of dance music, no matter what kind of style it is, have one hell of a talent that they KNOW will move a crowd and influence people globally. Even dj's on this board (Steve, Matthias, Dirk, Dave, James, Jake, etc...); I used to ignore the threads they posted up on here as links to their sets when I first joined on TA. But each one of them have impacted me in an unbelievable way that no words can explain the talent these guys have. It is the reason I am a believer of their sound, and is what continues to fulfill my music needs, everyday. ;)

I know. I was just kidding. I just don't ever want to play house. I think Progressive is about as far down that road as I ever want to go. I like music that has more energy and can instantly move a room. House just doesn't seem to do that for me. Now when the hell are we partying again?????

+1 on the comment from Carlos. Thanks bro. All of those guys are very talented, all are unique and it's flattering to be mentioned in the same breath with them.

Simply put, your tastes are becoming more refined and sophisticated. Like as you get older... in college you drink cheap beer (on anything you can get your hands on).... then you moved to wine and the like.

Same with music :)

Thanks Lance. Now I can't get by with drinking cheap beer at 33. :clown:
