Do "I like" threads = "Appreciation" threads? (pg. 3)

Well that depends, RJ. I'd consider it a unidirectional equality and not a bidirectional one. That is, if I appreciate someone, it's implied that I like them, but if I like someone, I might not appreciate them.
They're similar, no question. But I think appreciation threads usually exist to recognize some deed or contribution, however trivial or intangible that may be, whereas the "like" threads are really just insipid and generally insincere flattery.
The dictionary definitions do reference each other in spots, yes, but there are many synonyms in the English language that don't mean the same thing idiomatically (this is what often makes foreigners stand out). You get a feel for those subtle differences by reading the other definitions; in particular, part of appreciation is gratefulness (found in both appreciate and appreciation), but you won't see that word in any definition of like. |

Haha, you hate that too eh? I've seen first-generation immigrants from China with a better grasp of our language than that. I have to wonder if some people even think about the things they say or write, or if they just repeat whatever they hear from others. |

the best is when i SEE ppl typing "we mind as well do it" or something like that (ive even seen "we mine as well do it") LOL
so funny, bc YES thats how ppl always seem to pronounce that phrase, but uhm, the correct word being used is: "might," not "mind" or "mine," no matter how you or anyone is pronouncing it.
"we might as well do it"
there are so many more. its just amusing when you see ppl writing ungrammatically correct, but out of ignorance (not even knowing its wrong), not bc they conciously knew it was wrong and didnt care. |

^^ also drives me nuts when I see grammatical errors on TV shows written out.
I always think: "Oh , that looks bad... they didn't even realize that that was something they had wrong!"
Perfect example I still remember from Big Brother 6 or 7 a year or two ago.
Julie Chen in one of the contests posed the question to the group: "Which former Houseguest said that their favourite food was spaghetti?" ...
... and the above question was written out too on a board for all to see (including us, the rest of the world!)
... "THEIR" favourite food???! But the question stated WHICH (so only ONE person then) Houseguest! So you can't freaking use "their" since you're only referring to ONE individual.
The question should have read: "Which former Houseguest said that his or her favourite food was spaghetti?"
I know we all say "their" all the time in speech, it's commonplace, and I do too... its simpler, and seems to come naturally. But with the written word, I really bothers me to see such phrases constructed ungrammatically correct as such.
I'm probably alone, but I just think it looks so poor and is embarrassing to see. |
