The perfect computer...?

Alright.
Maybe 'perfect' is asking for too much, however, I DO need something that can handle loads and loads of music-production--something that'll let me work freely. Basically, a computer that's built for producing in mind.
I have already collected most of what I wanted in order to begin producing once more, and since I stopped in the first place (sucky 'puter was the main reason), I don't want to be held back by this dumb, solve-able problem... if it's solve-able, hah!
Anyways, any ideas?
Thanks. |

Unfortunately, Music Production is very hardware intense, and with the right amount of VSTs, you can bring any machine to its knees. But I am trying to recommend you a good machine.
RAM is the most important part. 2 GB should do the job nicely. If you have more to spend, invest it in even more RAM so you're set for the future.
CPU is also important. I think you should be fine with a dual core 4400+ processor. This is what a friend has as setup, and this can really handle immense loads of VSTs.
I wouldn't forget about a big harddisk either. You will get more and more Sample CDs/DVDs, and recently there have been a lot of sample based synths coming out on one or more DVDs. Spectrasonics Stylus is 8 GB, EWQL Symphonic Choirs as an extreme example something like 40GB. Depending on what amount of samples youre using and what else you want to store on your harddisk (games, mp3s, movies), dont save on the harddisk. I recommend 300-500GB to start with, you can still upgrade to more quite easily. Also keep in mind to get a S-ATA disk, this gives you a major improvement in disk access speed. |

| In terms of better storage look at newer motherboards that have built in RAID controllers, seems like a good way to improve on HDD read/write speed. |

I think I have the perfect production computer
cpu: Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 2.4GHz
gpu: Sapphire Radeon X1600PRO 256MB
mobo: ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
audio: Audiophile 192
ram: 1024 (2x512) MB RAM OCZ Gold something
hd: Western Digital 250GB
I can run 5 Toxics, 3 Massives and 2 FM8 and the cpu usage is under 10% (I currently use the Realtek onboard soundcard instead of my Audiophile, so the latency is 100ms). |

If you want to work freely, I suggest a intel quad core cpu.. that should give you nough power for whatever you do. I have a duall core conroe like ronk... and I am more than happy. But a quad will give you an additional boost of performace. I've tried a quad core, and loved it.. It's a monster powerhouse..

you people are mad!
there are anjunabeats/monster/recover/somatic artists that use socket a CPUs LOL
what do you do with all that power?
you don't need a in server to produce quality tracks
and why get a super computer and use only 10% of the cpu ??? |

because of the unlimited production options...my pc isn't that expensive, it costs around 1200 euro here, and I finally can use synths and effects like I want to (and with no crashes). it's a huge upgrade from my pentium 3... |
