Story Time!!!
So here's the deal. Last September a drunkass took a curve on our street too fast at 1:30 in the morning, hit a dumpster and then ricocheted across the street into my parked car. After 6 months the insurance finally got back to me and gave me these two options
A. Total the car, get $1000
B. Keep the car and receive the estimate, which is $504
The thing is, I'm moderately dependent on my car. Although public transportation is certainly an option, I need transportation for job prospects. Suggestions? |

id total it out, take the money, maybe add a bit from savings or parents or somehting if you can and upgrade a bit. You can get a decent car to see you through college for 12-15
As long as the passenger door opens :p |

It's actually sad that the bus seems to carry such a negative stigma about it, no matter where you live. I don't see a problem. For me it's free transportation to school so I can't complain.

i'm unemployed. By saying I'm dependent on my car for job prospects I mean that I need it because I'm likely getting a delivery job.

Thats one thing I was thinking. I was also considering totaling and getting a cheap moped. I've always wanted one and it'd be perfect when the weather's nice. Then again, during the winter it's another story.
If I wasn't dependent on my own transportation for employment I'd total it and put all the money towards tuition and just live off public transportation but that's not an option :( |

| does it run? can you drive it? if so just total it. then go buy it back from the tow yard. :) nothing illegal about that. it will have a salvage title but who cares. just take the extra money, put it away, save more and then upgrade. |

well what do you want us to say then? You're broke, your car is in condition, there's no magic advice here that will resolve your transportation worries with a flawless solution. If the car still runs, use that till it dies. Get some friends to help you fix it, read up on basic car mechanics, maybe you can fix this with your own hands.
no car - no delivery job. So how about finding an alternative job that requires no transportation like umm ... store clerk?
there are ways, you can tough it out :p |
