Virus B or C?
View this Thread in Original format

I had started another thread talking about buying a hardware synth - I'm all software now. I had talked about a Virus TI, but I just think its a bit steep for my first hardware synth. I was thinking of a Virus B or C?

At a high level, is there that much difference between the B and C? I looked at the specs and there doesn't seem to be THAT much difference.

Whatever you recommend, what would be the highest price you would pay for it?

Thanks in advance!!!

as far as i know the main difference are the filters. THe C also has a few more modulation possiblities and probably more onboard effects but other than that its pretty much the same. I'd recommend the Powercore Virus. Virus B as a plugin.

C personally

How much would you pay for it?

I was thinking about buying a virus ti as well, I was soo close to getting it but backed off the last second, it too much and i was thinking it was too high level for me as well...

Then you shouldn't buy a virus b/c either. They're practically the same apart from minor differences. Unless a lower price makes it worth it for you of course.

I'd say the powercore with virus multi license. Multiple virus b's for the price of one :).

There's indeed not much difference at all. At least not a huge step like the TI.
I thought the C had more polyphony and also eq per part so this makes the mixing part a bit easier (depending on your workflow of course).

i have a virus B - got it for 400. It doesn;t run in time with Ableton so it's gathering dust and I'm all soft synth now

I'm going to have to set the virus up in Cubase then rewire it to Ableton to make it work proper

They aren't the same. The Virus C has better DA convertors and twice as many Assign sources and destinations in the mod matrix. Those who have programmed a Virus will know that you can never have too many assign slots. Even if you blow all the Assigns on the Virus B on sound design you will still want to have free slots for mod/pitch whell control or to use aftertouch as a modulation source.

I bought a Virus B for 400 quid back when the VC was top dog. If you can get a VC for not much more than that I say go for it. But it really depends on how much money you are willing to spend.

The VC also has an extra 8 voices and a moog emulation filter which sounds quite good (though not much like a moog filter). You also get a 3 band EQ which is awesome since you can use each band as a modulation destination - something you ain't going to be able to do with a VST or outboard Equaliser. Not only that but EQ settings are stored in each patch so you don't have to dial in new settings every time you change a patch.

Bottomline: Go for the VC over the VB if you can get your hands on one and its not loads more expensive than a used VB.

Virus C, if you can find one for a decent price.
The extra polyphony is worth it. Unison eats alot of it.

Speaking of Virus, I'm getting a TI keyboard next week. :D
