Elaborating on what Yohan said...
I think the lesson should be that a cell phone may not work in these areas.... but he got LUCKY.
Keep your compass on you at times and don't travel alone, if you must, then don't do so without telling someone where you are heading.
Yes a cell phone saved his ass but keep in mind that he got into this problem because he lost his other more important gear.
(I work for one of the USA's largest outdoor outfitters, Campmor. I can not explain how important it is to be educated on the environment you will be in.) We sell everything from stoves, to avalanche probes and beacons. Our best customers are ones that know how to ask what they need. |

| rory did have a compass.... while he was walking he got lost, the snow was very high and started getting into his shoes... eventually after much exhaustion and starting to freeze to death they think he became disoriented and dropped his compass... passed out for a few hours... and woke up thank god. |

I was commenting that he should 1) know how to use it before you find yourself freezing to death and 2) keep it fastened to your clothing so you don't loose it.
I'm really happy he's ok but counting on only a cell phone to save you is the wrong message here. In 10 years when we have cell towers everywhere then that will be a different issue. |
