Multiband comp-how to?...look here

Hi TA'ers,
thought i'd share a little knowledge with you guys and post a little info. I cooked up a little trick to make multicomp a bit easyer so here goes:
- Activate a multiband compressor on your master track.
- Route a normal compressor after the multicomp and set it up so that it is triggered excessively. You want a short attack and release, also you want to set the threshhold and ratio up so that you have the maximum range between zero and infinite expression.
- If you listen carefully you can now hear and see which bands(Hi,Mid,Low) are cousing the most expression on the compressor.
- if you get too much expression in the compressor for say the low band, adjust the multiband comp so there is more expression on that band. You can do this by lowering the threshhold and increasing the range/ratio for that band. In some cases you will need to lower the entire gain on that band.
- Continue adjusting the multiband compressor until you get a constant expression on the compressor.
- Once you have the constant expression turn up the gain on the bass band until you get a slight expression on the compressor.
- Remove the compressor and voila, you have your multiband set.
it's a cool trick and it works wonders. All in all during the proces of mastering be sure to listen how the track sounds at low volume, if need be at very low volume. This will give you a clearer indication of wat it too load or too soft.

Thanks nhibberd I will try this out with my nice new copy of Wave Arts compressor. Looks like it would be a useful way of seeing what sounds in your tracks are activating the compressor. :)

no probs. I'm starting a pro mastering course in September and will definately be posting up a few tricks. Man what a complicated hobby I have, wish I had judt become a pilot or something.
Also, the same trick can be applied with a multiband comp after an EQ. So you can monitor the multiband what is too loud and tweak the EQ. This should be done after this first trick. Its just a little easyer than with the analyser. |

| thats a good logical idea man. i have stayed away from multibands since my work experiece at a mastering studio. the engineer said to stay away from multibands like the plague due to their over harsh effects on the output. i will try your technique out and maybe ill see if the multiband is my friend! |
