I'll give you that one.
And yes, the hazy fields of wheat were quite the glaring rip-off...but I liked it so much before that I didn't really mind. |

this is the person who was xerxes
huh?! |
Rodrigo Santoro was Xerxes?!
edit: Yes, Wikipedia's just confirmed. Heh, he's a good actor. There are several good films with him, such as "Abril Despedaçado" and "Bicho de Sete Cabeças". My girlfriend saw him once, and said that he wasn't charming, so to speak :p |

It's common Hollywood convention to implicitly state the homosexuality of villains. The Xerxes character is such a cliched image, albeit from the Hays Code era of classic Hollywood cinema.
Which, brings me to my real complaints, all centered on the idea that 300 was perhaps one of the worst executed films that I can remember. A number of KEY scenes were directly ripped from other films: the rain of arrows falling upon the hero at the end and cutting out just before they hit (Hero 2002), the fields of wheat as a heaven/haven with strikingly similar lighting (Gladiator). Also, the use of slo-mo was so overdone. There was a lot of fighting but you always felt safe, that is what slo-mo does for christ sakes. Sure it looks really cool, but it doesn't bring you into the chaos of the battle as say does the realtime action of the Braveheart fight scenes. Along those lines, the film lacked any semblance of pacing.
The heavy handed parallels with Terrorism were just downright infuriating, especially consider the "truth" behind the actually 300 story. Which, if you haven't read, is remarkable and would have made an excellent story! The film hardly bases itself on reality, which is perfectly fine, except that history in this case was actually more compelling and inspiring than fiction. |
field of wheat is elysium (sp), its the heavens in ancient times mythology, it wasn't invented by gladiator:rolleyes:
The comic book on which 300 was based was written well before Hero in 1998.
terrorism? what the hell are you smoking?
anyways, the film is based on comics and the slomo, xerex being homo and others being ulgy deformated are just exageration told by that guy who was sent by leonidas to tell other how he did and died, its a tale!
Of course he will say that leonidas was godly and the ennemis ugly and bad. A proof of that is how big the animals were portrayed. Never heard of elephants and rhinos so big, but if it was seen by someone who never saw them in his entire life maybe it'll be much bigger than the real thing. |

I guess I missed that...that explains a lot.
And now I feel like a n00b for not knowing about elysium.
Thanks.
p.s. there were some eye-roll-worthy lines in there with similarities to debates about terrorism. I'm just glad they didn't take over, but there was one, in particular, that annoyed me more than the others. If/when I watch it again, I'll try & remember what it was. I think it was somewhere in Leonidas's talk with the Persian messenger @ the beginning. |

Have I misunderstood the comments or are they portraying the 300 Spartans as freedom fighters and the Persians as tyrant terrorists? |

Well, it's not that blatant, and it's only in a few spots of dialogue, but it's also more complex. It's more like the Spartans are the cowboy freedom fighters and the Persians are the sensible terrorists. |

Can I read it that way? Or that's not exactly how Republicans and Democrats are seen up there? |

It's seen in that way by a particular group of people which does not make up the majority. |

Oh... it's just that I read so many jokes about it that I didn't know whether that's how the majority saw it :p |

majority on here, yes. But then again, a chunk of the c0r isn't exactly a representative sample of the US population. |
