LANGE - NOCTURNAL INTERVIEW

We know you first hit the scene in 1997 with your classic track, "Obsession", is it true you only learnt to DJ some 4 year later ?

Yes, that's right! In fact, back then I wasn't a clubber either, I just loved dance music. It made perfect sense to become a Dj as so many of my records were getting played in the clubs! Now it's probably my favourite part of the job!

You studied sound engineering before you started producing, is that something you would recommend upcoming producers do in this day and age ?

No, not really. Teaching yourself is best and it takes time & practice to really get good at engineering tracks. My course wasn't really a proper sound engineering course anyway It was mainly electronics with a few hours in a studio each week. I learnt more from building my own studio up over the years and just working out how it all worked.

How much production time on average do you spend in the studio each week ?

I guess I can spend anything from 30-80 hours a week in there depending on tour dates and the business I need to get sorted.

Where was your first DJ gig, and how did it go ?

My first Dj gig was for an Additive Records night at Bagleys in London. I really hadn't been DJing long and I was awful! I was terrified of making a mistake, and made plenty as I expected, but it didn't put me off!

As a jet setting DJ, what's your favourite city to visit ?

I have several faves, I would say Singapore, Sydney, Helsinki, LA, and finally London (as it's always good to finally get home!)

If you had to pick one track right now, what's the guaranteed floor filler ?

Lange vs Gareth Emery Another You, Another Me. I'm not just saying one of mine for the sake of itthis track has definitely seen the best reactions in my sets over the past 6 months.

You have been working closely with Gareth Emery of recent, tell us how you guys met.

We're both on the same DJ agency (Connected Dj's) so we got talking about doing a co-write. We became good friends so continued with the joint project and have done 5 tracks to date.

If you weren't living the life of famous DJ/Producer, what do you think you would be doing instead ?

I really don't know! Apart from a brief spell working in a shop paying off my student debts, I've been lucky enough to avoid a 'proper' job ever since! I'm guessing I'd probably be doing something like graphic design, but I'd still be making music in my spare time.

Whats on the agenda for 2007, can we expect a new album release ?

2007 is my tenth year in this business (I signed my first record deal with EMI in October 1997) and I'm going to make it a great one! I'm writing an album now and have taken a couple of months out of my diary to ensure I have plenty of time to do it. So this really is the Year for my debut album! I'll be providing some upfront clips over the coming months in the VIP area on my website, www.lange-music.com
I'm also in the process of expanding Lange Recordings, so expect much more from the label later this year too!
