Ha! Yeah, I was there too. And I didn't like him. :( He bored me. I like some of his productions though. |

i remember that night actually... i was pretty disappointed for not being able to make it that night, since he's one of the dj's i credit most for getting me into prog |

First, I'll say that it was a hard choice deciding where to go this weekend. Never seen Satoshie before live, so listened to a mix of his and thought it was really amazing. I also really enjoy BT's sets, and hadn't heard Tomcraft before either. Three of my friends wanted to hear BT, so I hoped somehow to start at Circus and end up at Avalon, but Tomcraft's set didn't start until 2, so I never made it over to Avalon.
Circus had the entire room open (no curtain divider), and the DJ's were playing up on the main stage. This makes the room huge, and it was about half full when BT went on. He played a great set, with many favorites at the end including Somnambulist ("Simply being loved, loved, loved"), Dreaming and Flaming June, for a few.
The sound went into complete distortion and then stopped cold at the end of BT's set (maybe better to say that this ended BT's set), so the ER crew was up on stage during several minutes of silence. Tomcraft didn't have any chance at a smooth transition, but played a wicked set of tracks for the small crowd that was still there. I was really into it until about halfway through Tomcraft's set, when the intensity of the bass started hurting my ears.
I went to a more quiet part of the club for awhile, but ended up leaving at 3:30. I really think it's sad when it becomes necessary to balance the risk of permanent hearing damage against dancing and enjoying a DJ set. Yeah, I wear earplugs, and they're the strongest available (32db NRR) without using earmuffs, and I still had to leave early so my ears weren't completely destroyed.
Apple has recently come up with a new improvement for its iPod software: Nothing can ever play louder than a certain volume, which can be set by the user. Unfortunately, there's no such option in a club, only protecting our hearing the best way we know how. If we still have to be concerned over the music being harmfully loud after using the strongest earplugs made, then something really seems wrong! I'd encourage club owners, promoters, etc. to take a look at this chart and make sure the volume's at a safe level where at least those who use hearing protection still have a chance of saving their hearing:

I know the clubs around LA have all installed new sound systems that are louder than ever though, so perhaps these comments are falling on deaf ears? :nervous:

Thanks for the review. I wanted to go for Tomcraft, and wouldn't mind going again for BT, but my plans fell through and I just ended up going to SM with some friends. I was supposed to go to Avalon, but by the time I got there the guestlist was already over and I didn't feel like spending 30 minutes looking for parking so decided to forget it.
What style was Tomcraft playing? On the electro/techy side? I love his productions. |

Very tech, had that German techno-funk sound that I can't quite describe...but maybe backwards, short beats that are spread out kinda weird and make your shoes go backwards would be a start... :D Remix of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" was playing when I left, but the first half of Tomcraft's set was nothing short of phenomenal! |
