Hey all, decent forum we have here. Glad to see lots of people here sharing their love for trance .
I have musical background in theory and guitar, but am now interested in creating trance music. The only thing I have right now is a copy of Ableton Live, and beyond that... nothing. No turntables, no hardware, no amplifiers, no laptop. Nothing. Could you fine folks give me a rundown on what's needed to create trance music? What hardware equipment is essential for having fun, creating and performing one's own music? What's an ideal beginner's setup if there is indeed hardware involved? I have searched for threads on the topic, and the few ones I've found are done by people who already know way more than I do. If any of you could give me a rundown on the basics of creating trance, that'd be awesome. |

Did you ACTUALLY press the search button? This question gets asked almost daily.
Things you MUST have:
Computer
Sound Card (aka "recording interface" or "audio interface"
Sequencer (Ableton, Cubase, FL, Reason, etc.)
Plugins (VST or DXI Effects and Synths etc.)
Samples (eg. a .WAV file of a bass drum hit)
Speakers (aka "studio monitors")
Things that are nice to have:
MIDI controllers (keyboards, controll surfaces)
Hardware Synths
DSP Cards
Hardware FX Units
Microphone
Microphone Preamp
etc.
Turntables are for DJing, you don't need them unless you intend on cutting samples from records to use in your songs.
Don't ask what is best, there is no best, only what you think is. ;)
You have all the info you need now to go and research the rest on your own. Have fun! |

I would personally include a midi keyboard in essentials, it makes a huge difference. More so for ppl with less music background but I find in invaluble.
