Why is it called an Avatar?

as far as i know, 'avatar' is a sanskrit word that means something close to incarnation, with lord vishnu being the prime example as he had 10 or so forms or avatars, including rama, krishna, and buddha.
i can see a vague vague representation of that in a personal picture, but really, anyone know where the 'calling your display pic an avatar' originated? |

but what i did discover that i truly didnt know was that computer=wise, it originated from the Ultima series. |

That's why Ultima IV sucked! In Ultima III you could spend all day stealing from chests... Ultima IV you can't cause your "Honesty" virtue won't go up!
