Well, I'm on a laptop and I'm sick of this F***ING M-Audio Firewire bizzo. It's time for an upgrade!

This laptop has a non-Texas Instruments non-Lucent firewire chipset. It's just some super happy fun yumcha thing... you know the ones... BUT, it does have Intel USB 2.0, like most laptops. Some time in the next 6 months I'll be getting a new laptop, which most likely will be the cheap kind that doesn't have firewire or anything else in general. PC laptops never really come with decent firewire chipsets anyway.

I'm trying to decide right now whether to go with a USB 2.0 interface or a firewire one with a PCMCIA/Express firewire card. Surely having an extra device (firewire card) in the chain will cause more lovely head f****s than plugging direct to standard Intel USB right? Correct me if I am wrong here.

How bad is USB 2.0 performance? I know USB 1.1 is basically the death zone, but surely 2.0 can't be too bad? I was thinking of getting an Edirol UA-101. It's basically the same as an FA-101 but in USB instead (OMGhadz who would have thought?).

Can anyone comment on the preamp quality in the Edirol units? I need vocalisation functionality :)

2.0 not bad - i was using it before with not a lot of issues - but not good if you are using midi stuff...I was recording vocals mainly and it worked.....from what i understand Edirol is really liked bby a lot of peeps...

The problem with USB is that it's shared by all your other USB devices, and that its speeds represent burst capabilities and not sustained bandwidth.

It's not the worst thing in the world, but I'd recommend firewire if you really need low latency. Even if it's a card extension, that's not such a big deal unless you get a crappy card.

Yeah, thats a bit of a bitch. All I really have is my 1000hz 2,000dpi uber hax mouse, external HD and MIDI keyboard. That should be ok right? Can't see myself needing to add anything else in the near future.

How is a good firewire card going to go though if it's on a crap cardbus? Mine is "ENE". Got NFI if thats any good or not.
