Get a Mac.
If you run PC, get a Mac and install Windows on it.
DO NOT get a Dell, Acer, LG (MSI), MSI, HP, Compaq, Samsung or any other brand out of the big 3 (or is it 2 these days? I forget) factories.
There aren't really any PC brands that compare to Macs for music production, but if I had to choose one, I would go with a Toshiba Satellite Pro. They *usually* have clean power, despite being from the budget manufacturers. You might want to check that out though... somehow.
ASUS might be a contender, as they're made in the same factory as Apple, depends if they use the same quality AC adapters though. Whilst Sony are also manufactured largely by ASUS, their software support isn't up to scratch, so I would avoid them too. |

I think these are the makings of a laptop that can run music programs.
You want:
512mb-1gig of ram
-I have ran many instances of reason, z3ta, v-station on flstudio on 512 ram, but I love having 1gig.
I'm not sure about processor speed but I know 2.0ghz isn't bad since I have that on my pc.
A nice amount of hard drive space for saving samples.
edit:
Buy refurbished laptops. They are used, yeah, but it's much more cheaper. |

I have 1 gig of ram, I think you want 2 if your planning on using samples. I looked at the macs and have been turned off by one point: they only have max 100 gigs running at 7200 rpm. Too little. Sorry.
I would want one otherwise:D Anyway, Does anyone have any experience with this new alienware one? I think its the Area 51 something... Is it actually portable, because I know they used to be way to bulky to carry, the new one looks thinner tho... Anyway, it rocks cause its got 2 hard disks, which I think is very important for music production, esp. if you wanna do audio.
from what I can see, I think Alienware is the way to go for pure power. Obviously u want the fastest processor u can afford and it should really be a core 2 duo.
Hey echosystem, what do you mean by "power" I suspect you don't mean CPU speed? |

Buy whatever laptop you want that has good specs.
Then go buy a third party power adaptor for it.
Its simple, the most expensive laptops are going to be better quality.
Toshibas are strong mofos but you pay twice as much for a toshiba than an acer with the same specs. |

Yeah I bought a Toshiba laptop a while back and held up pretty good. I mean it only had 512RAM, 1.5Ghz & 80gig HD. It died so I bought a desktop it's got 2gig RAM 2.0Ghz Dual Core, 300gig HD. Runs like a charm i love it. Was around the same price as my laptop too haha. |

No, I mean electricity :P
Theres nothing worse than spending $2,000 on a uber portable laptop to find out you have to go spend another $200 on a new power supply or DI box w/ ground lift that you have to carry everywhere.
Alienware is quite over priced. Really, if you want the cheapest option, go for a BTO brand and get it without windows etc. You can virtually get it half price. Then buy a generic PSU which doesnt suck balls. |

award-winning shop. was reviewed for their laptops, pretty good.
They do nothing else than create computers for music-production. |

Could you please stop being such a fanboy?
Macbooks are practically the same hardware as ordinary Wintel laptops anyway. Especially if he's going to run Windows on it, what you're saying just doesn't make any sense. How could it be better for production when it's got the same specs and the same OS?
Oh right, because IT'S A MAC!!!!!!!111one
To the OP: rules are the same when you're buying a laptop or a desktop. Get a dual core. Get at least 1 GB of RAM, preferably 2. Make sure it's got a 7200 RPM hard drive inside, not one of those awful 5400's. Don't rely on the built-in sound, you'll need an external inteface and that means you should look for a laptop with decent built-in Firewire. And do not buy those ridiculous ultra-portables, they skimp on everything in order to reduce the footprint and if you really can't carry an extra pound then you need to start exercising more.
As a brand, Toshiba is alright. So is Asus. So is Apple (Macbooks) for that matter. Alienware is a giant ripoff and they're pretty much tailored toward games anyway. I don't think there's anything wrong with Dell or HP either, the only thing you have to be aware of is that they preinstall a bunch of on it so you'll want to reformat and reinstall the OS as soon as you get it.
Acer, Gateway, eMachines, any of those cheapsie brands - yeah, you'll want to stay away from those, they're . If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. |

Anything with a core 2 duo in it and at least 1gb RAM.
I have an acer laptop with a 1.66Ghz Core 2 Duo T5500 processor and its more power than a destop pc with an Athlon 64 3500 in it.
Id gave a Mac a miss cause i just dont like what you become when you get one :)
And theyre overpriced. |

Depends on your budget. Atleast go for 1gb, intel Core 2 Duo, a fast harddrive and a good (external) soundcard imo. |

Make sure componets fit together and someone chooses them who has knowledge - dont get one of those, where they mix desktop-components with notebook stuff, e.g. 3 Ghz. cpu. |
