Are Vocal Trance bad for Trance? (pg. 2)

Never liked vocals at all. The only stuff I can stand is that late 90s euro pop that doesn't take itself too seriousely (and isn't too emo), example; Jam & Spoon - Right in the night

I hate vocals in trance, they are killing it. But there are few vocal trance tracks that I love for their vocals.

+1

in today's trance vocals are overused and it makes trance sound to much like pop music. That's not what trance is all about, if I really wanted to hear that, I would turn on the radio 'cause I can listen to enough vocal crap on there

Since then, the best vocal tunes i've heard have all been proggy stuff (not the schulz prog though)

in that vein, james alexander & pete gawtry - lost in you (miika kuisma remix) is by far the best vocal tune i've heard in the past few years.. really dark, subtle & atmospheric. recommended if you haven't heard it :) (although it's on j00f recordings so guessing you prob have :p )

as for regular asot/mainstream trance, i find the luminary stuff tends to be a cut above the rest, with fairly classy & unintrusive vocals that fit well on their respective tracks without giving them too much of a poppy feel

Vocals should be the exception in trance and not the rule like it seems to be at the moment with some well known producers. In fact this was one of the reasons why I immediately liked EDM.

I agree. Although the odd song with good vocals is nice. E.G. Armin Van Buuren and Ronski speed do some nice singing. For the most part stay away from vocals though.

I liked vocal tracks up till about 2005. I liked those in the past, like
Cass & Slide's "Perception (Vocal Mix)" as mentioned, Masters & Nickson's "Out There (5th Dimension)", Smith & Pledger's "Forever", Oceanlab's "Sky Falls Down", Thrillseeker's "Dreaming Of You" and Lange's "Sincere For You". Sure these are pop tracks, but as far as vocal tracks go, they are a lot better than the stuff being released nowadays. There's too many male vocals, and I blame Kyau vs. Albert and Ben Lost for kind of starting that trend...and then when KvA started teaming up with Anjunabeats...more producers followed. They can be good, and they don't really need to be deep, and philosophical, and can be pop-like, but should just sound better.

Agreed, Holding Onto Nothing was the last major vocal effort that worked for me, because of its self-consciously anthemic feel. But even in 2003, most vocal trance had become echo-padded pop tart syrup over paper thin production. There's none of the attempt to fuse talented vocal with production form as Chakra, BT, Mara, and others did so well.

On a related note, I think I've finally switched preference to the original version of Perception, though I still quite like the vocal.

Even though worse vocals followed those songs, they were still pretty bad. The last three, in particular, strike me as key points where vocal trance finally gained acceptance in the trance mainstream. (Not surprisingly, Armin championed them.)

Yeah I mean they aren't the best but I liked them and I thought they worked really well at the time. I mean there is worse out there like Ian van Dahl, Lasgo, DJ Sammy, Groove Coverage and the like. Now those were bad. But these were quite popular tracks at the time (2002). Pop? yes, trance? I don't know if you would exactly consider them "trance" but as pop-dance tracks, they are decent. Dance tracks vocals don't have to be Sarah McLachlan caliber good (though the remixes of her tracks are great), just some like the Lasgo crap....that's another story. Most of the vocalists on these tracks are quite popular and have been used many times with many popular tracks (Justine Suissa, Carrie Skipper, Kirsty Hawkshaw etc). They are right up there with Jan Johnston as far as mainstream trance-dance-pop music comes.

And again, none of them are Sarah McLachlan good, but like I said, dance music doesn't need Sarah Mclachlanesque vocals, just a little more musical than Lasgo's and Groove Coverage's horrible vocals (which are among the worst), which these singers are (more musically competent). Another track which I really don't consider trance at all, it's just a dance-pop track, is Andain's "Beautiful Things". I mean basically, what you might be hinting at and other people, is that they prefer vocals that are either 1. more subtle or 2. less pop-like/sing-songey. Which is fine, but some tracks are just...pop with a trance/dance feel, so they are going to naturally have a more sing-songey sound. A little more true vocal trance is so hard to find. If you want less pop-like stuff, then there are progressive house tracks with vocals, like say Terry Grant's "I'll Kill You".

Calling vocal trance trance is bad for trance.

Call it what it is: euro dance.
