New Stage Programming at Movement Festival Will Showcase Rarely Seen Genre of Electronic Music: Ambient

DETROIT- Paxahau today announced a new structure for stage programming that will give ambient music a chance to shine. Ambient is down-tempo to no-tempo music, traditionally for listening or more relaxed environments.

Two stages will be open from noon to 2pm at the festival each day, in order to help create the proper listening environment for ambient music. In addition to these festival openers, other early timeslots have been given to artists traditionally not considered dance music.

“Ambient has played a large, yet rather understated role in the evolution of electronic music,” said Jason Clark of Paxahau. “Up until this year it has not had a true chance to shine at Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival.”

On Saturday accomplished sound sculptor Jeff Greinke opens up the Beatport stage. Greinke uses various acoustic and electronic instruments and found sounds, performing music rich in texture, depth, mood, and subtle detail, creating worlds that hover somewhere between the exotic and the familiar.

Pole also joins the lineup of artists within the ambient showcase of this year’s festival. The music of Stefan Betke, a.k.a. Pole, is constantly in a subtle state of flux. His music is based not in a scene or in private experience, but in musical structures, which he decontextualizes in order to integrate them into his own personal musical language. Pole plays Saturday at the Beatport Stage.

Also on Saturday Paxahau is proud to announce a significant North American appearance of Higher Intelligence Agency. H.I.A. was formed in 1992 by Bobby Bird in Birmingham, England. The project gained quick notoriety for its amazing live performances, which encompass down tempo elements as well as break beats and ambient atmospherics. His renowned single “Speedlearn” and album “Colorfourm” launched the project into remix projects with various respected global artists. This will be H.I.A.’s first appearance in Detroit.

On Sunday the prolific Robert Rich takes the opening timeslot. In an era of laptop musicians, Rich stands out as one of the extremely few musicians who travels with a modular analog synthesizer. In addition to his more than 40 full-length releases, he has pushed the envelope of ambient music with concepts such as his all-night “sleep concerts” in the early 80’s and possibly the longest continuous piece of ambient music ever released, “Somnium” – 7 hours long.

In addition to the Ambient showcase performances, Paxahau last month confirmed the 2007 Festival will feature performances by legendary Detroit artists Moodymann live featuring Pitch Black City; Model 500 featuring the godfather of Detroit Techno Juan Atkins; and Jeff Mills, the longtime hard hitting “wizard” of Detroit Techno. A partial lineup of artists is available at www.demf.com.

Since 1998 Paxahau has produced Electronic events in Detroit. In that time they have grown to include a record label, booking agency, web-archive and event Production Company which hosts an average of 20 events a year in the city.

With a network of alliances and resources that span the globe, Paxahau has emerged as a premier promotions group within the electronic music industry. They plan on growing the festival into a cultural attraction that celebrates not only the sonic art forms associated with Electronic Music, but also the visual arts culture that has evolved from its influences as well.

Word. :)

Ambient is great . Good to see Paxahau giving it the exposure it rightly deserves.
