i originally had 192 mb (128 + 64) of PC-100 SDRAM in my machine. my bus speed is 100mhz. my friend gave me 128 mb sdram PC-133. i installed it in my computer.

should there be a problem with the discrepency in the type of ram (100/133)? is it ok to install PC-133 in my machine with a bus speed of 100mhz?

i've noticed that since i put the PC-133 module in, my system has been running a little strangely.

there should be no problem as the 133 ram will work at 100, its max speed is 133. what do you mean by your system running strangely?

well...it is running almost like i have less RAM. i had 192 and now i have 256. when running several apps and switching between them, things seem to be slow. also, when using winamp while other apps are running, the sound sometimes starts to chop. this didn't often happen when i had the original 128 BM installed.

I had a similar problem, I found a problem called cacheman, had a play with the settings and it ran fine.

there are some wizards in there which ask you how you use ur pc etc, run them if your not sure what you are doing.

i have an solution : yank out that crap that ur 'friend' gave u and sell it, then put ur old 64mb back in, problem solved.

easy way to see if the ram runs fine in your comp... pull out all the sticks and only install the new one. if it is ok then things are jusat messed up 'software-side' which is unlikely since it just changed when you got the new stick. Maybe its just ty ram. you know, poor quality ram may be VERY poor quality and sometimes it wont work as it should.

sell the 133 for a 100 or vice verse, it isnt good to mix em, it lowers potential performance. Check out www.pricewatch.com RAM is cheap as hell.

I have the same problem...but no biggie.
If you bus speed is @ 100 , that's the highest it will run at..
All the rams will run at the speed of the slowest ram....
But about this problem, i'm not sure what to do...

I take it you have an old computer. If your proccessor is upto about 400mhz (3-4 years old) it wont be able to run 133mhz ram. I was told this when i bought ram. Its because of the motherboard. So you dont want to update that. The differemnce between 133 and 100 is not that great. I am not suprised the 133 does not work. Most people dont realise that there is any difference, they think ram is ram. Well your computer is obviously not even using the new ram because when you computer was made it didnt exist.

So my advice is get 100mhz ram. Or get a new computerm they r cheap now. Very cheap. If you are running on something less than a gig processor then catch up. You will find it hard to believe you lived without it.

But yeah just get 100mhz ram. You computer doesnt like the 133mhz. Or get a new motherboard :) But ram is about £18 for 128mb so the ram is the cheaper option :)

how can i be sure that the ram is not working. when i installed it and then rebooted, the ram was detected. i was able to see the count during the reboot. it went to the proper amount that it should have. doesn't this mean that the ram is working...or does it just mean that the rem has been detected?

flystyler
Well it should detect it, but it wont function properly. So my advice would be to swap it for 100mhz. That will run fine. Although i didnt find that 128mb made a lot of difference anyway, coz i had a crap processor :)

Now i have 1.4ghz processor with 512mb ddr ram :) That is fast enough for me :)

It could be that the 133 ram chip is not as good quality as the ram you curently have installed.

In my case ive got a 64 and 128 mg pc100 ram and 256 in pc133 and my mothorboard can only operate at 100 mhz i.e pc100 speed. It could also be your mothorboard not likeing the pc133 ram which means theres nouthing you can do.
