its not any spyware. if you are concerned about what is in the archive it is the "hosts" file. not sure what that does look it up google. |

lol oh...
meh, don't mess with the hosts file imo, it can cause issues for people sometimes if they don't understand how it works (which is pretty easy).
Just use a in the middle proxy, like Privoxy or something that has a lot of more advanced rules and such for blocking out things.
If you are really paranoid, use privoxy + tor... :p |

well this hosts file only contains the addresses for ad companies and spyware companies (ie doublclick etc). not websites that can be legitimate.
and tor+privoxy is nice but slow as . |

i'm guessing you're nou. so...
so i decided to test out glorious Opera and omg, it's hella faster than mr. MemoryLeak/Firefox.
Q/Pertinent to this thread: is Opera naturally more secure than Firefox? meaning is it more secure from the getgo than Firefox?
I'd like to grab it for my brother, but if i have to scour the net for 10million widgets to cover his nuts, it for him
and Q/ for me: is there a widget that works for teh current foobar2000? i can't find anything beyond gaywinamp and sausagegay WMP. |

well in terms of security because of designed attacks for it, then yea its better than most just because it has such a low market share that most attacks arn't written for it.
Over all security is just as good as Firefox though. Both run in a "sandbox" (im using that term very lightly) in that they don't interact with the underlying OS in any direct manner.
in terms of privacy, if you are using it with TOR it does have a few headers that are somewhat dangerous as they could be used to track you back to your org ip... but beyond that its very nice.
I'm using Opera on Ubuntu Edgy Beta atm... and its just as fast in Linux as it is on Windows and Mac.
:D

Ads on sites help cover hosting costs and other things -- if everyone did what you're suggesting then many of the smaller sites they enjoy would slowly disappear.
Also -- doubleclick is not a 'spyware' company - go do some research.
