I smoked for 5 years, and I haven't smoked for almost 2 years now. The way I quit was that I was very sick, and I didn't smoke butts because I was too sick and my throat hurt a lot. Well it became about a week or something that I hadn't smoked and when I got better, I just never smoked again since :D I just didn't feel like smoking ever again.

My mother however, she smoked for over 40 years, and hasn't had a butt for over 8 years! I remember how she quit. She was trying to quit for a while and she decided that she was going to quit on "smoke out day" or whatever. It was like a little less then a week before smoke out day, and she was outside smoking a butt, and she thought to herself "why should i wait untill smoke out day?" and she put that butt she was smoking out, and hasn't smoked since :D :D

Good luck! You can do it!!!!!

Uh oh.....here comes a long post by me! We got a bunch of morons postin in this one. If you've never smoked, or smoked for less than 2 years.....get the hell outta here.....simple as that.....

"I smoked during highschool, and I quit easy...blah blah blah.."

"why did you start in the first place, blah blah"

wtf is this .....

What do people get from smoking cigarettes? You ever done heroin? Well, same effect, just not half as strong. Its more than a "little buzz" That goes away after awhile.....

See, people try cigarettes, and whats the first effect they get? Well, they get a buzz, or, they cough their head off.......what they DONT feel, is that nicotine flowing......you won't feel that for awhile until your chemistry starts actually craving the nicotine.........For most people, they try a cigarette or two, then they stop, tell you it tastes disgusting and don't like the coughing or their throat burning.....then for the rest of their life they question why people smoke......later on, some of them even like to say "they at one point smoked in their life and quit cold turkey" lol.

People don't realize smoking is more than just a "nicotine" addiction. It also is very mental. Simply having something in your hand, to put to your mouth, becomes a habit. Keeps your hands busy. You begin to rely on the cigarette, it becomes almost like a companion. It gives you something to do, while on the computer, standing around at the club, or a party, or wherever....Thats just the habit itself, has nothing to do with the nicotine. The nicotine addiction is a whole different story.

For anyone that says "just quit cold turkey, its easy, I did it", well........they really never smoked in the first place........they'd all love to tell you they were pumpin in 2-3 packs a day and have been smoking for 10 years.......although in reality, they never really started smoking in the first place........Anyone who REALLY smoked, and quit cold turkey, will most likely tell you, it wasn't too easy.....

Ofcourse, everyone is different. Everyone has different body chemistry and everyone reacts different. Nicotine makes some people sick......and some people just don't have an addictive personality...which can make quitting actually really easy.

Its funny cuz, well, no one ever asks anyone "what does that feel like? (when u light up a smoke)....no one ever really talks about it.....

Nicotine is definitely a drug, and you'll realize it when your entire body starts to hurt, arms, legs, after hours and hours without a cigarette. You can get sick......pissed off, and what not.....its definitely no fun.

REDHOT, look at drewfactors post........its good advice......to quit without a patch or gum.....

I just started up again recently after having only a couple per week for a while(after tokes only). I find the best way to quit or at least slow yourself down is to not buy packs. ever. just get your smokes off friends or bumming etc. or find something in particular to do whenever you have cravings and use that to gradually ween yourself off of it. it's all in your head, just keep telling your self that. u need to find the right thought process and stick to it. the bumming thing was mine, eventually i said it and it was down to after tokes. tho now I do buy packs , but I find they last a hell of a lot longer than when i first started. and when I need to stop I know I'll be able to because I've done it in the past.

That helps a lot. My friend stopped buying packs and was bumming smokes. He was able to cut down a lot. Now, nobody will give him smokes because they cost like $9 a pack now.:D

Just after the Ralph Klein whip: :whip: :whip: said "...the only way taxes are going in this province is down..."

exactly. it goes further than that too. it's a social thing. you can talk to perfect strangers outside a mall or theatre, and know you have something in common..... you're having a butt together. you give someone a cig , maybe next time you see them you have a conversation.

it's something to do, but it's more. it relieves anxiety, allows you to put things into perspective. it gives you a nice buzz when you just had a 9 hour shift at work and you're pissed off at the fat bitch you had to work with who did dick all.

but the world is based on balance, and with good things comes bad things IE, coughing up brownish/green gunk for a week in the winter, noticing that your basketball skills have erroded because you're too out of breath to make a jump shot etc. that why I've quit in the past. I just told myself my physical performance isn't up to par, and i made myself clear my lungs out and eventually got back into shape. it's not easy, there were times where I had every impule to stroll down to the convenience store and pick up a pack and a coffee but I buried my head in a pillow till it passed.

now i pace myself, a couple a day during the week and I try not to over do it on weekends.

Mate, i'm a smoker too and i quitted twice, once for eight months ... it's not hard to quit, it's hard not to start again :(

Throw your box in the litter and keep yourself busy with somethin, when you feel the need for a fag, shot a candy in your mouth, liquorice works better ... anyway it's all a matter of will strenght.

Good luck

No actually. Because as SportsTrance said, and I've said, smoking is mainly a mental thing. And if you don't think like a smoker, then you are not a smoker.

PAH! Wuts ur point?

I still think its his own fault and he should quit under his own will power by himself to prove to himself and others that hes not such the idiot he is for starting in the first place..

He made a choice... he started smoking..ITS HIS OWN FAULT!

Thats all im saying...

Good luck on quiting REDHOT, im sure alot of ppl will respect u when u do:)

Cold turkey, that's what I did. Last Feb I found out I had a hole in my lung so I had to quit (:whip: ). Didn't bother with patches or anything, just quit. The first month wasn't too bad, the second few were terrible. It's pretty easy to fight the cravings when they're so intense coz it's like a challenge. But after a few months you realise that there's probably never going to be a point where you see a cigarette and are 100% not interested. You just keep getting these little urges to light one up every now and then and those are the ones that will get you back where you started.

Since then I've started again (:() but for all intents and purposes, I'm happy that I managed to quit for so long and I know when I want to do it again I can. Now I only smoke a few a day, and I smoke lights (whereas I used to smoke 20 Bensons a day) so it's not so bad anyway. It's made me able to regulate what I smoke too, whereas before I used to just light up whenever I felt like it. Now I can say "ah that, wait an hour or so".

SportTrance
Its definitely not easy.......

Everytime I attempt to quit, its not really the cravings that bother me......or the fact that my damn body/arms hurt......or that I am pissed off......what bothers me, is me imagining myself, at a bar, or a club, or a party, and NOT smoking.......You become so damn attached to keeping yourself busy, that you almost feel "lost" without it....its in crazy I know......and I am not a social smoker, I smoke like a chimney more by myself than when I am out.......but its just so hard for me to imagine me being somewhere, and NOT smoking......thats what bothers me the most.....

it........ I am gonna try the patch out.......i've talked to people who've used it before, and they said it worked well. I got the damn box in my kitchen, I just gotta decide when i am ready to use it........

quitting has been running around my head for the past 5 months.....7 years of this is enough.....
REDHOT
hey guys, wow
no need to argue
i appreciate the comments from everyone, and yes i know i am an idiot for smoking in the first place, But i totally agree with ABTsportsline, I didn't ask what people think about me smoking? I asked for some help , so thanks ABT

now Sportstrance, I also appreciate ur effort, but nicotine is not what i am addicted to, i don't even know myself if i am addicted or not, and dream grl is also rigth when she said that when u want to quit something, u just do it, I 've done it before, but after a year seeing everyone of my friends smoking ,I had to take on a butt again.

for me it has nothing to do with being addicted, it is what i use to calm my stress, is the pleasure of holding that stupid little cigarette,it is so stupid. All I need to find is something else to calm my stress and I will be ok.

Thanks again for those being supportive
