Rental car into Mexico?

My friend and I are planning to go to Mexico this Saturday to buy clay pots for our houses. Every car rental (we need to rent a cargo van) company says no, you can't take the car to Mexico. But how would they know? Can't I just drive it across the border, acting like it's my car?
Any of you guys done this? |

Last summer my friends and I took a road trip to Mexico in a rented van. Everything worked out perfect. |

| well they would know if they have a GPS system one the vehicle.. one that they won't tell you about. Some car rentals have that. |
