"Marker Events" in your life

I am taking my very first ethics class which I find so interesting to the point where I am sad when class is over !!!

We were discussing Paul Philibert's theories about "marker events", how these events throughout a lifetime shape how we behave, and help us to revaluate our values and morals. These "marker events" could be a death of someone you know, or just a general event.

So here is mine....When I was 6, my cousin was visiting and he was always such a handful, always getting in trouble and stuff. So my younger brother, my cousin and I were playing and I slammed the door and accidentally cut my younger brothers finger off, it was hanging by a piece of skin !!! So my parents came running upstairs and immediately put the blame on my cousin and didn't even ask us what happened. I just sat there and didn't fess up to what has happened. It was a huge deal and my younger cousin really got in trouble. I repressed this memory and only recently remembered it, and confessed immediately to my family.

Anyway since that day, I have always taken responsibility for my actions, always. I hope everyone thinks this is as interesting as I do.......:nervous:

Anyone else have any "marker events" that they remember???????

I thought that your marker event would have been when Will Dailey made you run out in front of a car, and your leg got run over.

I'd have to say my marker event would have to be the birth of my daughter. I did a complete 360 in the way I behaved and made me totally revaluate my values and morals.

Funny how you have time to be posting on TA but you can't get your ass to work...

That's my marker event.

I really enjoyed my ethics classes as well! I wish I had stayed in that program...I only had the opportunity to take an intro ethics course followed by business ethics and media ethics.

Anyhow, the only event that comes to mind is when my parents moved my whole family from a small town in N.S. to Newmarket, ON when I was 15. Changed my entire direction in life, though I didn't realize it at the time.

when i was 3 or 4, i was at a swimming lesson and we were lined up for an elephant slide (the hilight of my week). the girl in front of me was my best friend at the time. she went a few steps up the slide and her ass was in front of my face. i have no idea why, but i bit it, very hard. she started screaming and her mom came running, and made a big scene. my parents were wicked pissed at me, i remember being in terror as they yelled at me asking wtf I was thinking, they told me later that all i could say was 'i was pretending to be a crocodile'. i had to apologize and buy her a present and everything

When I was 3 my parents split up. I was old enough to understand the emotion involved but not old enough to understand the meaning. For years the memories were repressed but I would have nightmares. In the nightmare I would hear people yelling but had no clue what they were yelling, but i knew it hurt me really bad.

Today I wonder why I am drawn to the "underdog". If someone is upset I want them to be better. If someone is hurting I want to cure them. I feel my empathy is directly related to that "marker event".

well... my negative marker events could be summarized as facing death/bodily harm many times.

Age 5: put a paperclip into an electric socket at church. zaaaaap

age 6: leaving a chinese restaurant, i was the first to push the door to leave. it was heavy and was stuck. when i finally budged it, it bounced back on me and the corner of the door handle slammed into my eye socket, but missing my eyeball if that makes sense. (like it hit right into the corner, just mm away from going blind. i have the scar to prove it)

age 6: hospitalized for salmonella. was in there for 2 weeks

age 11: went for surgery for enlarged lymph nodes in my neck in fear of cancer. (found it was nothing). i still have the occasional flare up

age 14: had an allergic reaction to an unknown substance. my body was covered in hives (including my feet, so i was unable to walk). while in the hospital my throat closed up and i was unable to breath for a few seconds while the doctors gave me adrenaline

something happened between these two but i cant seem to recall it for some reason

age 19: probably my cloest to death experience. while coming back from panama city on the coach bus from spring break, our bus got in an accident. around 430am, a truck tire from an 18-wheeler flew into the driver's windshield cracking it from top to bottom, the bus lost control sliding into the ditch rolling from one side of the highway to the next and back again. all the overhead compartments emptied out, my friend sitting next to me hit the window so hard that he cracked it. apparently when he woke up, i was on the ceiling. i had a concussion, bruised knee caps, and a sprained back. ended up in the hospital as i counted probably around 12 ambulances, 10 cop cars, 10 fire trucks came to our rescue in columbus. good times for sure, esp the $1000 hospital bill that came with it.

good times. what doesnt kill u makes u stronger

recently it was my trip back to syria for the first time in 19 years... oh man it changed my perspective on many many things, as an added bonus, i wanted to check the house where i grew up, and it was just demolished:( then I walked to the school i was going to and it too was demolished and rebuilt :(

The two places where I had the most memories from when i was kid were gone:confused:
