what do you mean by layering and effects? Whats the best way to make a good sounding bassline

I use a number of different synths, Fm8 or Absynth are good, I'm also just getting into pro 53... Loving the screaming leads and stuff on that now, and its hell easy to program too.:D

But trilogy is definately going to be your best shot for real bass sounds. No doubt. You might find that Absynth will give you what you want if you really want a synth.

do a google on layering basses, there a sh*t load of info on this forum covering layering...

search substorm as he wrote a good tutorial on it!
BarendB
LennarDigital Sylenth1 is really great for basslines. Warm, fat and pretty much no need for external effects.

For bassguitar sounds I would say Spectrasonics Trilogy.
Centra Spike
Mostly ES1 in Logic, Bass Line in Reaper and a couple of free analogue sounding synths.
Michael Dow
I'm a fruity user and i do nearly all my basslines with fruitys own 3xosc. Its got good tight envelops on it so you can get some really punchy basses. :)

I almost exclusively use Tweakbench Pressure for my basslines. The guy stopped letting people d/l pressure, though, so sadly, my advice can only go so far.
substorm
Bassline from AR!

And i must say that the new Refx NEXUS has some killer basslines in it!
newtrancer
zeta 3 is good for techno and psych basslines

and there is a guitar synth

MegaMan
i've used Trilogy, but it takes too much of cpu
i recommend Muon.Tau.Pro.VSTi.DXi.v1.1, it does not take a lot of cpu, really simple to use, yet very powerful

And that's the secret to good basses.

A lot of dance music has a lot of sounds in the sub range. Sub is imo very important. I first grab a synth that can make good sounds in that range, put a low pass filter on it.

After that I slap on V-station, this will be my mid range bass. The subish area is really there just to give my mid range bass (my v-station) some oomph. I EQ my V-station on a parametric EQ. EQing is a very subjective process, only experience, and trial and error will make it sound good. I tend to lower frequencies, by a little bit. V-station tends to have some rumble in the low frequencies. The mid ranges I slightly raise, and for the high frequencies I lower them just a little bit. My parametric EQ essentially looks like an upside down V. I guess you can slap on a band pass filter instead, but I'm really no fan of band pass filter for basses. After that I add a little bit of delay, some chorus to make it sound a little wide, and a tiny bit of reverb. You can add some distortion to add to the harmonics if you wish. I tend to keep my sub bass dry because I don't want it interfering with my kick.

This is just one method to doing it. Again, there really is no science to making good basses, or good sounds in general. It's a subjective process that takes a bit of experience, and trial and error.

Virrtual Bassist is amazing for real bass guitar sounds, refx nexus has loads of good trance bass sounds and is the best overall vsti i have ever used. Check out my latest track 'the journey' i made the bass pattern with refex nexus and i used used refx nexus for a lot of this track
