I still think Resident Evil 2 is the best game ever. |
I didn't know what disc two was for.. then I finished disc 1 and it hit me. |

| Pure quality. You don't get that sort of playability nowadays! |

I miss some of the old Super NES games--Donkey Kong Country, Zelda-A Link To The Past (best game ever), Mortal Kombat (I know, I'm bad).
Some of the more recent graphics have better graphics, but such things as character development and innovative forms of play have gone downhill. I guess we can't really expect better due to the fact that character and plot have been suffering decay in Hollywood too. I guess it's just the instant-gratification spirit of the age screwing us all.
On a different note, does anyone else have Kong In Concert (a collection of songs based on the old Donkey Kong soundtrack-impressive, I tell you) :toocool: |

Timeless games... it's a tough one because while, yes, games like Goldeneye and such seemed amazing at the time... usually what you get is that the level-designs in Goldeneye are great, but the gameplay is old and dated. For instance, in my opinion, Goldeneye was made completely obsolete when XBox entered the picture and created Halo's control scheme. While Goldeneye still has amazing levels and weapons, the gameplay is now inferior to anything created, and thus, it is NOT a timeless game.
I'm always a little bitter with people who say Counter Strike is a great and timeless game. Now, don't get me wrong, it IS a great game. But It's true predecessor, Action Quake, represents the ultimate, unbeatable multiplayer FPS of all time to me. Bleeding, Limping, Bandaging, Straffe-Jumps, the level designs... no FPS game before or since has impressed me.
Smash Bros Melee, sure... unless Brawl actually improves upon the series. I'm still a personal fan of the original Smash Bros, although the over-poweredness of Pikachu and Kirby kinda ruined the overall quality.
Metal Gear Solid, Yes!
Resident Evil 2, Yes!
Resident Evil 4, maybe.
Streets of Rage for *Sega*, sure, but nothing like Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time.
Mortal Kombat? I'm not going there, I'll say this, the ONLY reason it ever got popular was because it was the first game to actually display gratuitous ammounts of blood and gore.
Tekken 3? Probably not, Smash Bros as a whole has pretty much destroyed any fighter before it.
Final Fantasy 7? Argh! Again, the only difference between FF7 and the multitudes of BETTER RPGs before it, is that FF7 had prettier graphix. The gameplay was already done in FF6, and besides, Chrono Trigger is the ultimate RPG ever made.
Now for my list of Timeless games:
Tetris
Pacman
Super Mario Bros.
'BMX Racing' on Quatro: Sports
Ice Hockey
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (in my opinion, the greatest game ever made)
Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Mario Kart 64
Command and Conquer
Metal Gear
Metal Gear Solid
Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time
Geometry Wars Evolved
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario 64
Dragon Quest 8 (beautiful graphics with all the old-skool flavour, it'll never die) |

Nice post, I disagree with your thoughts on Goldeneye though. I still think Goldeneye is better than Halo. I never found myself able to get into Halo all that much. The levels were just so boring.
I totally forgot about the original smash bros as well, that game was something else.
My friend just loaned me his PS2 and vice city. This seems pretty amazing but i doubt i'd have the urge to play the missions over and over again.
I've never played A link to the past, but i don't have any of those old consoles or whatnot so i doubt i'll ever get to try it.
One game i just remembered.
SMASH TV!! How ing awesome is that game! |

partially true, but i would say this is because of Turok, not xbox. Halo didnt create the dual analog control scheme, it was an option in GE! i always played GoldenEye this way, but then again everyone usually claimed using the shorter characters as cheating since they didnt want to aim up or down.
GoldenEye was ground breaking and timeless, since it came out about 6 mos before most took notice, it predated even Half-Life but with similar level goals and gameplay options. Half-Life didnt even have as sophisticated enemy physics, but is clearly considered timeless now| |

| How could you say Goldeneye was worse than Halo? Halo's single player is by far the most boring game I've ever played. (Multiplayer different) |

Pretty much everything on 64
I can't agree on Goldeneye, though, just because of the controls. If you've played any shooters since then and tried to go back and play it, you'll know what I mean. It's IMPOSSIBLE to try to shoot people using just that one joystick. |
