ALGIERS, April 11, 2007 (AFP) - Two suicide car bomb attacks claimed by an Al-Qaeda affiliate rocked the Algerian capital, including the prime minister's office, on Wednesday, killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 160.
The bombings, which followed closely on the heels of suicide blasts in neighbouring Morocco, fuelled regional fears of a resurgence in militant activity following crackdowns by North African governments.
The first of Wednesday's attacks was carried out by a suicide bomber who drove his explosives-laden car into a guard post outside the government headquarters in central Algiers, police said.
At least 12 people were killed and 118 hurt, according to the civil defence department which warned that the toll "could become heavier".
A few minutes later, bombers driving two cars triggered explosions in the eastern suburb of Bab Ezzouar, on the road to the international airport and not far from one of Algeria's largest universities.
Police said 11 people were killed and 44 wounded in the blasts that demolished an electricity sub-station and badly damaged a police station.
Al-Qaeda's branch in North Africa claimed responsibility for the attacks, publishing photographs of what it said were the three suicide bombers in an Internet statement.
The statement on an Islamist website often used by the Al-Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden said the car bombings killed at least 53 people.
World leaders reacted with horror to the bombings.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his "sorrow and indignation".
In Washington, both the White House and the State Department condemned the attacks.
"These horrific acts indiscriminately killed members of the security services and civilians alike," said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack.
In Brussels, European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said: "These were odious and cowardly acts." |

Never was, lot of African and Middle Eastern countries refuse to have anything to do with AQ for this very reason, some parts of their communities might pay them lip service but they certainly don't want their methods being used there. |

Hell, even groups like the IRA, Red Army Faction, Action Directe combined didn't cause the hurt & death that these other fanatics are causing.
Until other members of said religion of peace actually step up and try and get these radicals under some measure of control, this will keep happenning since any intervention by the west only throws more fuel on their fire.

Your post is very discriminative and very rude. You really think the leaders of the Arabic countries that have been hit by terrorists are happy about it? They wanted it to happen? They did much less that USA to stop or prevent their attacks? You think Egypt was benefiting last year from terrorist attacks on its popular resort that hurt Egyptian tourism? Give me a break! They have security there, and terrorists still managed to strike though.
The only way to prevent these terrorist attacks once and for all is to create a massive police state where everyone is monitored, you would then be very happy, eh?
Or the only other way is American blessing? American invasion? Puppet pro-American regime so that more terrorists flow in and kill more civilians? |

People hate the US and western countries in Africa and the Middle East and sometimes rightly or wrongly the US and the west is responsible for some of their woes.
Some of them will quite happily tell you, they like it when Americans die.
Most go about their day to day lives as best they can like anyone else does and sometimes a certain percentage of that population really, really likes it when people like AQ operate the way they do and kill westerners.
They'll tell you its good when they get killed.
They're like the kids here that think Iran is tough standing up to the west, the kids posting vids and pics of American soldiers and civilians getting killed think its cool too. Just like western kids think it's cool to see movies where the bad guys are the Viet Cong, Commies and Muslim extremists getting killed is very cool.
It's just a game to them.
Very few will pick up that rifle or bomb and go out there and attempt the culture of violence, much the same way western kids don't and I like to think of it as 'token hatred' in a sense that it's only worn on the sleeve and displayed as such.
It's cool to hate america and the west.
Virtually none of them want the practice or the insurgents of AQ operating in their countries, because they certainly aren't sending out that memo or polite telephone call beforehand like the IRA used to do sometimes saying.
"Would you mind staying away from such and such a building, we're going to blow it up."
They don't ask if you're a muslim, christian or where you where born.
They don't even care if you're sympathetic to them with that token hatred.
They don't ask you nicely to stand over there while the bomb goes through the barricade.
Because AQ and a lot of those extremist attacks rely on one factor alone to get publicity, body count. Doesn't matter too much who's ass is getting decked, it's all about the deaths (and to them, hopefully the westerners killed) because that's what makes the news, its what they do, its how they operate.
It is how the muslim extremist operates, god will look after the believers who are killed in the process and they'll go to heaven and god will reward you if you kill the enemy and die in the process.
Terror is only a partial side effect, killing is the primary purpose of these operations, not scaring the westerners, not blowing up infrastructure, worrying politicians or anything else and with the barest pretence of political agendas.
Just killing.
All pretence of the act being carried out in your own backyard and the 'token haters' are sorted out from the 'real haters' when they have to pick up the pieces of their relatives, neighbours and have their homes, source of employment and streets destroyed. |

I agree with a good degree of what you're saying, but I'm LOLing at the fact you're wasting your time dealing with Magneeto and his orange colored idiocy. He obviously lives in some delusional world where Russia is benevolent and his newfound home, North America is the devil, YET he chooses to live here as an adult. I gave up dealing with this retard a long time ago. I wish everyone else did, too. Maybe he'd leave the board and leave the arguments to those with facts and logic. Either that or head to the COR. |

I've actually had some constructive arguments and chats with people on the COR, more than here sometimes where people come in simply looking to troll.
I'm already an anathema to most of these people, my mere existence, lifestyle, choice of partner, wealth, independence and achievements is a gross offence to everything they believe in. Course they still can't get their heads around why I would fight so hard to keep those things and a right to have an opinion but I don't expect them to understand.
Essentially I've nothing to lose by arguing here really :)
They can't splatter my nose across my face for being lippy, belittle me and drag me down to their level, all they've got left is to hate me and basically, that's just another day on the calendar really as far as I'm concerned. |
