government could seize control of Venezuela's cement factories if their owners
refuse to lower prices while his government struggles to satisfy rising demand
for housing.
Chavez, who says his government is transforming Venezuela into a socialist
state, said many of Venezuela's cement factories "prefer to send the product
abroad to sell it at high prices rather than offer supplies for the interests
of the Venezuelan people."
"If the cement factories do not (sell in Venezuela), we will occupy them," he
said.
Chavez, who was re-elected in December, has moved to nationalize Venezuela's
largest telecommunications company and the electricity sector, slap new taxes
on the rich and impose greater state control over the oil and natural gas
industries as part of his shift toward socialism.
The president's critics, including leaders of local business chambers, argue
the nationalizations will hurt Venezuela's economy by scaring off foreign
investors. Chavez's political allies argue the nationalizations are necessary
for the success of the government's development plans.

Well, I'm sure he means good, and control like this is often beneficial for a nation needing to build its infrastructure...
However, the long term results will be predictable. Unless he somehow finds the perfect swing between capitalism and socialism, he's going to end up as the usual fascist control organizations. They always secularize at first, "for the people's good", but that never lasts long.
Eventually, the people who needed cement for their houses will be scratching their heads as to why they've got guys with AK-47s forcing them to farm 12 hours a day. "For the people's good", of course. |

Anyhoo, I wouldn't really base a foreign investment on whether they were socialist or not, because look at China. They have an extremely business-friendly economy, so they get the investments. Chavez is shooting himself in the foot in the long-run. |

Ah, but like Venezuela, China can turn around any time and seize everything at the drop of a hat if they wanted to.
China simply had to be more open, lest they follow the path of their Russian communist brethren and fall behind in a modern world.

So why haven't the neocons ordered attacks on Chavez yet?
Screw Iran - they've got a bigger army and will probably be more tactically challenging to uproot and rebuild.
