Freshwater or Salt

| Interested on getting a fish tank for my house, maybe 40-50 gallon tank, but my question is that is more of maintenance for a salt water tank then it is for freshwater and if so, what kind of fish should I get for either one? |

| if your a beginner i recommend you start with a fresh water tank (Tropical fish) i would only buy a salt water tank (Marine fish) if you have experience with fish keeping.. a fresh water tank needs a lot of attention, you need to do a 1/4 water change every week and have the water on the right PH level, (Water hardness). also the temperature is very important. (28/30)degrees. i would recommend to ask your local pet shop how to get started, and if you need anymore help about fish keeping you can always pm me:) |

Have you had a fish tank before? If not, get a freshwater tank.
Salt water requires a lot of care and it is $$$.
I had fish tanks for about 15 years and the thought of having salt water frightened me. |

| i've had fish my whole life, literally, i would go with fresh water as salt water is much harder to maintain |

Go Fresh Water..... they are easy to maintain and the fish do not cost an arm & a leg if one dies on ya.
And for the love of god do not do what I did with my first tank I tried. I bought some African Cyclids(sp) and some Red Belly Pacu's well all good till the Pacu's started to grow then eat each other. I bought the pacu's cause they are cousins to the Piranah.... look just like them and feed just like em too. I fed mine diced meat, bannanas, cherry tomatoes and the occasional live feeder fish. When he would eat you could hear him working the food in his jaws due to they have molar like teeth. Well Packey as I called him ate all the other fish in the tank. I had a 250 gallon, about the length of a sofa. and he out grew that. when I moved I had to get an oil drum to move him. I wish I had pics of him, but just beware of the machismo first look and buy these fish. They are awesome, but unless you are into mercy killing, cause I tried to get rid of him at the local zoos and aquariams, no one would take him... :(
well I was determined to keep him, was about to buy a new larger fish tank for him..... Had to move again used another sand blasted oil drum but something had to have been left behind .... :( he died of some type of contaniment left in the tank. I had packey for about 4 years..... in side of 4 hrs, he was gone..... I took him to the beach and buried him in sand dune......

whoah that thing gets big! sorry to hear about your loss, but it sounds like you had a hell of a time with Packey while he was alive and kicking :p |

I had a cichlid for ten years in a 45 gallon tank. I had it for 10 years. I bred it and then its mate died; i kept it alone after that. I was able to feed it by hand.
When you start your tank up, read up on the fish you want to keep. |

I used to have a tank when I was kid. A Siamease fighting fish was the prime attraction the tank, I had some Neons, Zebras, Swordtails, Guppies and a couple of other breeds.
One thing I warn you not to do is over cram the tank as the water can go toxic due etc due to waste.

Reminds me a bit of what happened to my sisters mate, when she was a kid they had a massive community tank with some quite rare breeds. They had hundreds of fish and because their parents were rich they could pay someone to look after it and clean it out etc. Anyway they went to a pet shop brought a few a fish in one caught her eye the bloke behind the counter sold it without saying the word. Not sure what breed the thing was but within a week or so it had literally killed every single fish in the tank! Her parents were properly fuming about it. |

Why don't you and your east coast, volvo driving, latte drinking, saltwater fish preferring friends just go to legal seafoods and have some lobster rolls!

Totally disagree with this statement... or did you mean to say salt water? I have no experience with salt tanks. |
