| So I have just started pretty much producing my own music and I currently have Fruity Loops XXL with some great VSTs. I want a synth to go into that. Currently I was looking at the Axiom 49 by M-Audio. The reason I like it is because it's cheap and it has midi-pads on it. What does everyone think? Also, I am getting a mac as well and what do you recommend when it comes to producing on a Mac. Thanks |

| The Axiom 49 is not a synth, it is a MIDI controller. Which is it that you are after? |

go for synth1 - i think it;s the best free synth there is.
Or just use ableton - it;s got some nice sounding built in synths for you to use |

| well I guess I am not sure what I am talking about here. Basically, what I want to do is have an interface with Fruity loops that allows me to a.) use the VST(s) on it and b) change the keys on the board to different sounds so I can record them in the program. For instance, if I select a arp I want to be able to play it on the keyboard much like piano roll in the actual program. Thanks for your help |

A MIDI controller (or "MIDI Keyboard") is what you are after, then. In your case, the VST is the synth (because it is what is synthesizing sound). You're just using an external keyboard to control it (which actually makes no noise on its own.)
I use an Edirol PCR-30. I've been pretty happy with it, though it doesn't look to be as nice as the Axiom 49. I got mine for ~$130 though.
As long as you spend more than a few bucks, I'm sure you'll be pretty happy. |

| thanks I'll let everyone know how the m-audio is. I'm fine with using VST for my sounds. |

ebay...
axiom 25 for ~155$ (including shipping)
axiom 49 for ~220 - 250 (including shipping) |

| Roland SH201 is the best "starter" synth out there - and you won't outgrow it like you would a $200 Casio. |

I have the axiom 49 and I am very content with it. It offers a great relation of price and performance. However 250 bucks is still not cheap... if you are a beginner, you better just grab a cheap used midi keyboard/controller off ebay and see if this is what you want. If yes, then go get the axiom.
Here is a video that explains setting up the Axiom with FL and shows some basic functions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KkqszlX6BQ |

| I love the Axiom 49, it's a great controller. I use it with Sonar 6.2, and with the new ACT functionality it really replaces all my other control surface dreams (Mackie Universal, BCR, BCF, etc). It totally changed my workflow and made life easier for me. |
