Supporting the Troops Because They Protect Us: Two Big Lies
I was watching the Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV the other night, mostly because my body produces excess testosterone, and at one point during the program the fighters took magic markers and started writing things all over the walls of the house in which they lived. At one point someone wrote “We Support the Troops.” Then that person started mentioning how the fighters in the UFC support the troops who are out there fighting to “protect our freedom”. I laughed.
Well, just as this nice, well-meaning person commented on how he supports the troops, I, as I often do, spoke back to my TV set and said, “No, you don’t support the troops; you simply say and write on walls that you do!” I thought to myself that this person should be more accurate and simply say, “I write on walls inside my home that I support the troops and that is all that I do in the way of supporting them!” I think people should just come out and tell the truth. They should have bumper stickers and signs on their homes and little ribbons that say, “I don’t do anything to support the troops except wear this ribbon, hang this sign or bumper system or say the words, ‘I support the troops!’” Let’s face it, that well-meaning UFC fighter is not doing a damn thing to support the troops. |

Theres plenty of possible meanings. Why don't you operationalize it so we can have a common ground to stand on? Your excuse is nothing but an easy cop out. |

"If you don't support the war, you don't the troops!"
"You can't support the troops and not support the mission!"
These two lines are a load of bollocks...nuff said... |

Well what exactly are you supporting then by alienating yourself from the cause, or more like agenda, they're implementing? It doesn't matter if they're just "taking orders" or are unaware of why exactly they're there. If you're going to join a brainwashing institution like the army you're kind of responsible for that decision and everything that follows from it. Military personel are pawns of the goverment, their identity as soldiers that is. So what does "supporting the troops" mean to you? |

I am more talking about Bushies, or people who blindly support him and whatever he does. People who take orders from Bush or soldiers who do. I don't hear it as often, but you still hear Cheney talk about it and probably from those who still support the war (which is probably fewer and fewer nowadays, most polls show more than half of the American people are against it).
To me, supporting the troops means looking out for their best interests (including giving them proper medical care, armor, pay etc, all of which isn't being done) and only putting them in places where they are absolutely needed. War should be a last resort, and our military is being stretched too thin. The war was rushed, without any foresight, not properly planning, and should have never happend in the first place. So a smaller military presence in Iraq, used for security purposes, less in the line of fire, should be our goal. So I would support a phased withdraw. At the rate we are going in Iraq, we will be in their forever and loose more troops, while Sadr builds up his support (he seems to have more support right now than the Iraqi government) and his army of course...and chase us out, which they are doing.... |
