Anyone know about using another computer dedicated to a synth or an FX send over a gigabit network? how well does that really work? |

google FXTeleport
Don't know how well it works, gonna get another computer to try it with sometime. |

Very well
EXCEPT, you get alot of extra latency. So, what you would do is make the midi running the VST locally, then swap over to the networked computer once done.
Reaper has this function inbuilt :) |

You can use FX Teleport or VST System Link and they both work perfectly. Or, if you've got enough hardware, you could even run the MIDI directly to the slave computer and patch an audio cable back to your primary system, which will obviously work, just as well as any hardware synth would work.
FX Teleport has a bit higher latency than VST SL, and isn't perfectly compatible with every plugin, but it's more CPU and memory efficient. If you want the best results, it's best to use direct patching, although that's also the most expensive route since you need two low-latency workstations and good audio interfaces.
I made extensive use of FX Teleport before I got the Powercore. Rarely had problems. |

Direct patching? Can you describe abit how it works? Can I controll the vst im running over FXteleport on the main computer? |

You can but the only snag i've run into is that you actually have to manipulate the network computer in order to register the automation. You also have to load up the patch from the other computer as well. This is kinda annnoying in that i have 2 networked computers in the other room used for the big ass sample librairies. I get alot of exercise running back and forth and my power bill is ing huge.I tried vst system link and it was kinda crappy. Less delay because of the ADAT connection but i found it pretty buggy.
I also have 2 UAD and 2 powercore and a small sex organ. |

There's not that much to describe, really, it's the same as using the second workstation like a hardware synth. Just load up some plugins, either in standalone mode or in a sequencer, have them routed to some MIDI channels, patch the MIDI from your master to the slave and the audio back from the slave to the master.
As for FX Teleport, the plugins will open up on the slave workstation, so you'll either need a KVM switch or a Remote Desktop session.

Remote Desktop is your friend. |

So for "direct patching" i don't need any new software? Just run Cubase on both computers, and have the slave output audio to the master, and hook their midi together? |

There's no need to put that in quotation marks, it's not a special term, just the words I happen to have used in the first reply. But anyway, it should make perfect sense that you don't need any new software; on the slave, you're just taking MIDI in from a controller (your master), and sending the audio to your line out (in this case also hooked up to the master).
You're going to find that it's more of a nuisance than a tool like FX Teleport because you have to reload all your plugins and settings on the second workstation every time you open up the project. The nice thing about FX Teleport is that it does all that grunt work for you. But certainly it's not strictly necessary, and an ordinary MIDI+audio patch will have lower latency if your slave workstation has a low-latency sound card. |

I didn't mean it like it's a special term, I just meant it's a term, not a program or something.
I defiatly would want to use FX teleport because I can't stand having to reload patches, thats why my jp8000 gets so neglected. =-( Really wish Rekon would make a vst editor for it. |

I kicked this idea around for a while... doing a dual computer setup, and just realized all i needed was one fast computer. My guad G5 blazes so fast i've never even seen the processor bar(s)go over 25%.
Doesn't seem worth the complication. The more complex my studio gets, the more time I waste not making music. |

Yeah, with my new 2.4 Quad 2 Core projects that I couldn't even play anymore cause they used 100%+ with my 3.7 pentium get like 25% cpu now. Never maxd out cpu yet and I use like mastering plugins on every channel.. When I do start maxing out my CPU I'm going to buy a UAD pci-ex card. |
