I would have to disagree that Canadian's adopt a "Japanese Work Ethic".
For me its simple and Malek explained it well. Japanese ppl work damn hard and never question authority. Anyone who has worked here knows that us Canadians LOVE TO COMPLAIN. Where I work people complain so much about such little things that you'd think they thought it was their job.
Sometimes I wish we had better work ethic. Some people just need to STFU and get their work done.
Either way this discussion is a very ambigous and is riddled with subtle stereotypes. The reality is that YOU make you own work environment by having a positive attitude. Plus every company has different values and expected work ethics and its up to you to adhere to the culture of the compnay you work for in order to succeed. |
NOpe...no stereotype was intended. It was pretty much an agree or disagree and what do u think and what positive suggestions can we offer out there...for a happy work environment. That's about it. |

I understand stereotyping was not your intention but it is inherent within your proposed "topic". I am not here to argue, and as you can see I related my thoughts on your topic - including the stereotype comment. As I too made stereotypical comments regarding Canadians because that is the direction your discussion brings.
In hindsight your discussion has nothing really to do with "Japanese work ethics" and could easily have been entitled "How to improve your work environment". |

So true..but one also has to try to get the attention of the readers too...so I used the wording from an old 80's tune..thinking that it would get the attention. Instead...it turned into something that ppl felt like arguing about. Who knew?
In truth there was no intent to put down japanese, Americans or otherwise. And no need to suggest that canadians are lazy either. It was just a topic that came up in passing...and thought it would be a good convo...without the need to use directive words such as "you" or "likes of You" or STFU..or..some other non related smart ass comment. |

Sounds like someone is complaining that they have to work hard, produce results and get things done... |
Definitely agree.
The Japanese work hard because they take pride in their work and their designs. I try to follow a similar path.
Those who think one needs to suck up in order to succeed will likely never succeed. In order to work directly below upper management you need to be an advisor, and that means you need to be assertive, otherwise you're useless. And obviously, executives are executives because they are already highly assertive (none of this nonsense about nepotism or inheritance please - it happens, but rarely).
People can rationalize their negative attitudes toward work however they like. Personally, I work extra hours because my employers/clients expect excellent work from me, and it often takes more time than planned to deliver it. And like most people, sometimes they'll try to play games with me, but I stand up for myself, simple as that.
Edit... wanted to recognize this quote too:

So true, and I hear that so often especially on these forums. People even think it's some deep sophisticated philosophy, that they "work to live" instead of "living to work". While it's generally a bad idea to think of one's job as the primary determinant of one's identity and status in life, if you can't feel any pride for the work that you do then maybe you're in the wrong career or need some more skills. |

What I can't tolerate the most is the people at work who can't mind there own business and want to games so they can get a power trip.
I think Canada has a pretty good work conditions on the most part. Some countries employers treat there workers like complete . Some people are just caught up in there old fashion mentality of the master and servant which still doesn't produce the results they want. |

Ok..was talking to a friend recently and we kinda agreed that all jobs here in Toronto feel like they apply Japanese work ethics
|
Sounds like stereotyping to me..
This is what stuck out for me and I struggle to see what it adds to a discussion regarding the Canadian workplace.
A negative work environment is only left to breed if all that is focused on is.. "What everyone else is getting".. |

Nope...no stereotyping. Just like everyone else that has ever played the role of a friend who can empathize...I was listening to my friend say this and agreeing...because my friend needed me to do that for him.
This site is so quick to pounce on ppl they don't really know. |

| I think your problem is just that you're a horrible communicator. This isn't the first time you've been misunderstood. The worst part about it is that you aren't even willing to examine why people are getting the wrong impression of what you're saying...instead you just lash out and accuse US of having the problem. |
