Except for the mercury content of the new bulbs, how is reducing emissions a bad thing? I am not talking about green house gases, but truly reducing the amount of energy each person in Ontario uses.

Reducing "emissions" is a bunch of bull. Reducing energy costs is a wonderful thing for individuals to do. Reducing either of those by banning perfectly legitimate, safe, and legal products is a blatant violation of property rights and other civil rights.

Love these light bulbs.. it's too bad that they are expensive here in Trinidad, which is why I tend to buy them in TO whenever I fly up.

i read somewhere that all the capacitors and electronic doohickies inside the CFLs actually create more pollution in their manufacturing process than they save during their service life... and if they're not properly recycled than things really get messy.

i'm usually skeptical when governments jump on these kinds of bandwagons and everyone shouts "hooray!"

here's an article that was written in response to australia's incandescent ban: http://sound.westhost.com/articles/incandescent.htm

Remember the immortal words of Mark Twain, who said, “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

another article that decries these hasty bandwagon policies...

Coal plants at the moment produce much more mercury than these light bulbs will in landfills. However, there's not really much of a reason to ban old lights, I'm sure people will not hesitate to go out and buy them themselves because of growing energy costs...

cost savings is the #1 motivator. People in general won't care enough about the environment until it costs them too much.

From a commercial Interior Design perspective, this is a huge issue. Fluorescent light is great for energy saving, but creates a very cool, white light. In some cases this works well, but for example in restaurant design, fluorescent bulbs do not render food well, and do not create a warm, ambient feel that is sometimes desired. You can achieve this with halogen, but its not the same as incadescent.
