In comes swamper with Thor's Hammer of Bannation for posting such piracy!

Why not consider getting a mac?

Or buy online with the option of XP instead of Vista.

I've never been too fond of PC laptops, most if not all have fans on the bottom of the PC and usually when they overheat and say you have it on your lap or in a clogged area they'll shut down randomly.

I'm kinda a mac whore too so it's your choice really but I prefer mac for producing.

Vista is just MSFT's ploy to change market practices and to get new revenue since they have been lax in that area for some time since XP's release. Not to mention the drastic change in hardware thats required to run vista at current speeds xp can run at.

It requires you to upgrade your video card to a DX10 256MB model, 5GB HDD space, and 1GB PC400 or greater system memory. At current industry prices that will put a computer up around 900 bucks when it should be 500 or so with moores law factored in there.

900? He doesn't need a DX10 card to run Vista...He can run vista perfectly fine with parts for 500 dollars or less. Conroe just dropped to about 230-240 from 300. Memory isn't that expensive if you're on a budget. Hard drives are the cheapest thing ever, 250gb SATA will be around 75$ and the graphics cards are fairly cheap. Not to mention the 8600 DX10 cards are coming out if you want DX10 and will replace the 7600 prices. The 8800GTS 320mb costs about 260$ so the 8600's should easily be around 180-240.

That is no where near 900$ unlses you want to play at amazing levels of quality in games.

um, why not remove vista from your machine and install whatever you want?

vista so gay. I worked computer retail at the launch and it made me feel guilty selling $400 benchmark tests

but yeah, like Lilith said, Dell will be reverting back to manufacturing computers with XP pre-installed.

R-Engineers have been on the mission to bring DX10 to the XP platform from Day0 and they are finally making progress (if gaming is your thing). And once 9.0L comes out, all your DX9c games will pwn as well (as long as you have your DX10 capable card)
It's only an emulation process from private hackers, so it will probably buggy, but hey, so are the official drivers for the vista platform.
My buddy has an 8800gts that worked properly with winXP. then he upgraded to Vista, did the clean install of the official vista drivers, ed his world.
He had to get the 3rd party Vista Nvidia Omega Drivers, and they pwn!

tupac wouldn't use vista
igottaknow

Great, that means we should all use it now.

Can't Dell only issue computers with XP until 2008 when Micro$oft stops issuing new licenses to the manufacturers?

Also (this is going to sound really stupid), can software that runs on XP run on something like Linux without too much hassle?

IE: too much hassle for a guy like me who needed to ask the question in the first place lol

I'm going to be wanting a 2nd laptop pretty soon, but don't want the bull that comes with vista. I want to run horsepower-intensive programs like Ableton and Traktor and don't want any hassles with them crashing (nevermind they're not store-bought copies either).

Most probably, yes.

There are virtual machines for that. Don't know whether you'd like to call use one of those 'a hassle'.

well when I was junkying Linux a couple of months ago, the two biggest Windows Emus were a software called WinE (which was completely free) and (i believe it was called) Cedega, which has a $5 monthly subscription.
I got my games running "ok" through WinE, despite the fact that the linux ATI drivers were a piece of . I got Ableton and FlStudio to work after about 12 hours on each (gathering from about 10,000,000 different guides on the net). I never attempted Traktor. However, the audio was pretty ed up since there were, too, no official drivers for my sound card.
Cedega is supposed to be better, i never used it. I think they also primarily aimed at perfecting the emulation of certain games.
not to mention the hard drive collapsed on itself, so i came back to XP.

Import
If your savy enough, or know someone who is, and dont want to uninstall vista, just install a duel bootup, so you can use xp for now, and when vista becomes more popular (as the same thing happened from Windows ME - XP) and the programs are better supported on vista, move back.

Otherwise most small computer stores will sell you a PC with either operating system still, but laptops is a little more challenging.

xp has no "crack". there is a WGA crack that allows you to download updates. there is also a registry hack that allows you to install the genuine verifying updates from MS. i have it at home. if you want that pm me.
