Hey guys, Im a Dj over here in san diego trying to get booked for the local downtown clubs. Ive been giving one of the promotion companies out here demo after demo and it seems like i pretty much have my foot in the door but just a bit. The problem is that I love playing mostly trance music but they are telling me they are more likely to book me if I play or stick with House music. I am a little hesitant since I wanna play music more on the lines with Andy Moor or Gabriel & Dresden rather than Carl Cox or Eric Morillo. What are your opinions?

From a promoter's standpoint, I don't see why you wouldn't at least be considered for the House party, seeing as Trance and House can work quite well together during an event. It's not like you are trying to play DnB at a House club. It makes sense musically to book DJs at the beginning of the night who spin slower/Deep House, and then to book DJs who spin similar music, but at a higher BPM/energy level (ie Trance, funky House, etc.).

Our last party in Hickory, NC musically worked like this: We had a progressive Breaks DJ start the night (very slow mellow Breaks), then a Deep House DJ, then an Electro House DJ (speeding it up a little), then me (I play funky/disco House:D), then our headliner (funky Breaks) and closers (also Breaks). So the night was split up into "House" and "Breaks" sections (with the exception of our opener, because he had to be somewhere later that night...), with each of the DJs building up to the next DJ's set.

IDK about your particular situation, but listen to the DJs on House night. Are they playing Deep House, funky House, something else? The type of House that is being spun might not work well with your Trance sets.

No matter what, I wouldn't give up spinning what you love. If you need the money, go ahead and try spinning House (it could be a LOT worse[Top40], believe me), otherwise keep plugging away at the music you love, and try applying at other venues.

1. Play the style you like. You'll be misrepresenting yourself if you play stuff you don't really like....leave that to mobile DJs.

2.Get to know the guys that run the nights at these clubs. You can't just hand out CDs and expect a gig.

3.San Diego is very limited in the EDM area of music. A lot of EDM nights down there are run by promoters from L.A. Gte up here to L.A. and meet some promoters.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 till blue in the face, and don't give up./

Play house!!!

I'd be careful who you listen to here...

It comes down to exactley what you said yourself, staying in the bedroom or not~

and if you dont wanna stay in the bedroom, from experience I'm here to say its not about 'whatever you want to play' unless you've actually earned that title (which none of us here have...obviously)

So, that being said, it's not hard to see what actually needs to be done, not saying you can't bend the rules at times and experiment, but its not the jolliest thing in the world to play whatever you want and have no one dance and have the promoters going wtf at you

you might as well play in your bedroom if thats the case, and while it may not be exactley what you want, thats life, and more so, thats buisness

until you get to that point, I'd use your head and be really smart about what your playing depending on what the promoters and crowd wants, despite what some here may think about it

depends where you wanna go with it really....

Buy some house records and get into it. If you think you can definately get a booking for a house night.
But keep up on your Trance, and when youve got your name on flyers from a few house nights you will have more weight with promoters so you can start playing what you want later.
also you could easy take the house night and drop a few Trance records in towards the end of the set, half of promoters wont know the diff anyway.
bottom line is get your foot in the door first man and the pendulum will eventually swing your way.

when you dj there's never a distinct line between what you want to play and what you don't want to play.

even if you are not playing your usual style chances are you are still playing what you want to play.

There is a difference between what you want to play and what you want to 'hear'. I don't particularly like to listen to electro house but I play tracks like Lake & Leger - Striped Flower or Nightriders - She Wants Me (The Hamptons Popped Collar Rub) often when the crowd and venue fits. I wouldn't start playing chateau flight tracks when I am trying to build up a vibe.

I can think of only very few gigs where I have had to play something that I don't really like to get people to start dancing. For instance, Sander Kleinenberg - This Is Miami (Cedric Gervais Remix). Most of the time I don't have to rely on tracks like this, but this crowd just could not and would not dance, and the promoter that night had done a terrible job marketing and there was a lack of people and alcohol.

Suffice to say I made a fair amount of money but I left feeling like and I just went home and went to sleep instead of hitting up afterparties. I won't do that gig again.

I honestly feel like if you are DJing and insist on doing what I did that night to make money then you are in it for the wrong reasons and it's going to wear you down quickly. I see the point in using it to get a foothold, but I think you can get taken advantage of like that, and I also think there are other ways to get footholds, like I posted above - throwing your own parties and creating a crowd and a presence/brand.

After throwing a lot of my own parties I can't understand how anyone would want to do anything else on the local scale. Sure, it's a lot of work, which is a turn off to some, but I always feel rewarded and a definite sense of musical freedom this way.

i get to play whatever i want, i chose to play what the crowd wants, seeing has how they're paying and i'm playing
s3nate
Play both?

Zild
I think the simple solution is to go with house, since it is so much more diverse than trance.

I wouldnt conform because the minute something else becomes more popular for one reason or another they might expect you to change your style again and play whats popular

I say do what you want and stick to it because eventually people will notice you for being original in whatever way that may be I would hope so anyways

Things are working out well for me = ) Im sure they will for you to brotha

;)
