You are hardly a noob. I think it is kinda obvious. Techno is a lot harder and doesnt seem to have anything in it for me :)
There is a site somehwere with the definitions of all the genres, i am sure someone will post it :) |

Well, in Germany they call DJ Scott Project Techno and here in Holland for example Hard Style or Hard Trance.
Techno is Sven Vath, Carl Cox, Chris Liebing etc.
And thats was here alot earlier than the Techno as you know it. |

nope...we call scott project hard trance as everybody does...but in germany the term "hard house" doesn't exist...and some other things like "progressive house" is in germany something you guys would call "minimal house" for example |

| i think the main difference is that Techno has got no big melody, just simple "loops". I think many definations are not right used in Germany. For example that progressiv here mainly stands for harder techno or that Beam vs. Cyrus (or simliar artists) are called "Hardtrance" and not Hardhouse :) |

| Yea trance has a melody while technno just mainly has those beats. Stuff by Scot Project, even though it's harder, still has melody and thus we dub it "Hard Trance." Class Dismissed. :) |

| and if you wanna get REALLY technical then theres Detroit techno and Euro techno...and thats just overly complicated. i have too much experience with the detroit stuff - it would be damn near impossible to confuse the two. techno often sounds like hard industrial rock, with no melody and the only cool part is when the dj mixes in the next song...get really drunk if listening to it...heh/ |

I totally agree with the mixing part biz... Carl cox, whn I saw him, played rather uninteresting music in and of itself, but the man has a great talent.. he mixed songs for 2 minutes and up, did some amazin switching back and forth, backspins, turntabling, ohhh it was so much fun.. Techno IMO is best in a club with a great DJ, not as good to listen to alone just cuz its not "melodic" at all.
