Sacramento, CA – Today, the Assembly Judiciary Committee unanimously passed (10-0) Assemblyman Joel Anderson’s (R-El Cajon) Assembly Bill 221. AB 221 would prohibit California’s public retirement funds from investing in foreign owned companies that do business in Iran.

The Judiciary committee’s passage of AB 221 was a major victory for the historic legislation, and added to the momentum that the bill has built in recent weeks. On March 28, the bill passed the Assembly PERSS Committee 4-1 with strong bi-partisan support.

AB 221 is supported by 25 organizations including Teamsters Union, Simon Wiesenthal Center, Anti-Defamation League, National Union for Democracy in Iran, and the Alliance of Iranian Women.

Roozbeh Farahanipour, Chairman of Iranians for a Secular Republic, provided gripping testimony:

Many of you have probably heard of the "student uprising" at Tehran University July of 99. You may have seen crowds of Iranian-Americans gathering at the federal building in Westwood to commemorate the date the Tehran regime brutally murdered several students by throwing them out of third-floor windows. Other Protesters were murdered during Clashes with plain-clothed and uniformed security forces. I was there. I was there when that happened.

They were throwing students out of dormitory windows chanting: "oh, Hossein, oh Ali, accept this gift from us." I was there…

Thousands of students and other protesters were arrested during the brutal crack-down by the Regime. I was among those arrested – I was one of the ones who got picked up. They held me for more than 2 months, beating and torturing me.

One of the many tortures they subjected me to was known as “Joojeh Kabab” -- the "chicken kebab.” They called it that because they would: tie my feet together, tie my hands together and skewer a pole between my hands and knees and proceed to whip me, as I hung from the pole. Thus, the Chicken Kebab analogy.

Presently, the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) – which oversees California public employees and school teachers’ taxpayer-funded retirement funds – invest in companies that do business in Iran. In 2006, $24 billion of taxpayers-funded retirement dollars were invested in 300 foreign owned companies with direct ties to Iran. Anderson’s legislation would end those investments.

“Who's funding terrorism? It sure shouldn't be our public employees," Anderson said. "Money is the mother’s milk of terrorism."

Anderson’s introduction of AB 221 earlier this year generated a wave of similar legislation in Congress and state legislatures. Similar bills have gained momentum in Florida, Maryland, Texas and Colorado. Additionally, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) introduced H.R. 1357 in the U.S. House of Representatives, which would end the investments of all federal entities in companies that do business in Iran.

Hopefully the despotic Iranian regime gets the hint.
It may or may not really effect them, but it's a good start until they can get their head screwed on straight.

China, Russia, North Korea and Venezuela. all enemies of true freedom but seen as an ideological paradox when juxtaposed with Iran.

should give you an idea on how morally and intellectually bankrupt the regime in Iran truly is.
