| quote: | Currently promoting his new Sequential CD, Hernan Cattaneo visited Melbourne this month at one of its premier venues, Brown Alley. Collaboratively brought out by the Darkbeat and Sunny crew, Hernan was set for an epic 4 hour set along side Melbourne’s finest local talent in a special Day/Night party.
One of the biggest names in the progressive scene, Hernan Cattaneo was supported by local DJs of sounds varying from Minimal Techno to House and Electro. Featuring a stellar line up in the main room - with each DJ to play at least 2 hours; this party was going to be one not to miss.
Arriving nice and early at Brown Alley, First DJ playing was local Dean Millson. Playing to a rather small crowd allowed him to play some great progressive tracks including The MFA’s, ‘The Difference It Makes’ and ‘Furball’ by The Operators. As more people began to arrive, Dean swayed it into a more techno direction in anticipation for Dave Pham, in one of his numerous gigs that weekend. Playing some nice deep Techno, Dave played a solid set with even the classic Holden song, ‘A Break In The Clouds’- thrown in for good measure.
Heading towards the evening it was Gavin Keitel’s turn at 4 pm. Playing a typical solid set, Gavin began to get a few people off the couches and onto the dance floor. Featuring tracks like Samuel L Sessions new number on Klap Klap, and Robag Wruhme ‘Dopamine,’ he set the stage for local star Phil K. A first time experience for me, the hype behind the man is wholly justified as it wasn’t long before he started doing some interesting effects. Accumulating a decent crowd by the finish, Phil played a combination of Electro and House – with techy elements. Seamlessly flowing into Rollin Connection’s set, the atmosphere of the night party was taking over as everyone waited in anticipation for Hernan.
Keeping the crowd on the floor and in the mood, Rollin Connection played a great warm up set for Hernan as 10 o’clock came around and the Argentine was suddenly up on stage. Beginning quite deep, dark and progressive, it wasn’t soon before Hernan Cattaneo had the crowd screaming with their hands in the air. Slowly progressing between sounds, certain aspects of Cattaneo cannot be omitted, his presence behind the decks, his immaculate track selection and his devilishly talent when it came to mixing, left me and many others in awe. Dropping several tracks from his new Sequential album, amongst many unknown and brilliant tracks, several highlights included a new remix of Orbital’s, ‘Chime,’ ‘Arachnofunk’ by James Harcourt, the classic prog trancer by Quest, ‘The Shepherd’ and his second last song, a new mix of the old Australian tune ‘Dreams’ by local boys Quench.
Staying on an extra hour as he was enjoying himself that much, the people at Brown Alley were lucky enough to get not 4 but 5 hours of Hernan Cattaneo. Closing with the Blue Foundation’s ‘Sweep,’ next DJ up was Ozzie LA. By this time it is worth mentioning that the numbers on the dance floor had significantly dwindled due to the energy and exhaustion that Hernan kindled in everyone. After the deep and progressive set from Ozzie, it was up to Dan Mangan to close the night off, by the end of it all this 18 hour Day Night party was going to be one to write home about.
At the time it was evident this party would be a contender for Party of the Year, and on recount, it’s even more obvious. 5 hours of superfluously perfect mixing and track selection, Hernan Cattaneo is an amazingly talented DJ and for price of this almost festival like party - it was more then worth it in every way. Unlike many other parties with a single DJ being the highlight, Darkbeat & Sunny wisely choose their line up and it shows as every single DJ held their own and played their sound, making it quite possibly the best party of the year.
5/5
