Review: Sunday Fun-Day at Zona (April 29th, 2007)

After a Saturday evening of many logistical nightmares (4 nightclubs and 2 hotel room visits in 12 hours) I figured Zone would be an ideal way to spend my Sunday morning...
There are some days at Zone when the tunes are good; others when the tunes are GREAT, and some when the tunes are so amazingly loud and crisp it makes you think that all the music in the world was made to be played for that place. This past Sunday it was later option, the tunes were monumentally intense...
<- that's me haha
Firstly, I walked into the room to Jayforce hammering out some pretty heavy electro. Listen, the style just isn't my thing, but I'll give Jayforce props, he does what he does well. (and really, the place ate it up) I felt like he had a few misplaced vocals, but that overall he was very pounding.
Secondly, the Vinyl Junkies. I have to say that was the tightest, most intense set I've seen them play to date. They've really carved out for themselves their own techy, driving, and relentless sound. *Think Dubfire/Fanciulli with heavier basslines (a la Toronto persuasion), and a bit more club friendly tunes.
Most know that I'm good friends w/ Vince & Val but don't let that taint the review. In my opinion they have reached the same plateau as the other great Toronto dj's of past and present. I was impressed and they deserve more recognition.
As usual, Zone delivered. I didn't see any of you guys there (minus Mark & Sheldon) so I figured I'd share my review of tunes/ debauchery.
:) :)
Edit: Did anyone see the other DJ's of the day? I know Nathan came on at 4?? |

When I read the name of this thread the first thing that came to mind was Arizona's in St. Catharines. (please tell me someone else here has experienced "Zona's" on a Friday night?)
Having said that, I would love to catch the VJ's in the zone one day...after hearing those guys rip apart the drink the night of the Armada party they have completely won me over. I concur with everything Jon has said in regards to them carving out their own sound and being on par with the rest of the locale. Excellent work dudes! |

I know exactly what you mean. There has been many a time when I felt like Zeus was throwing thunderbolts at my head because the tunes are so intense. |

Sorry Jon.. I am hijacking... :p
In all the times I have been to the zone.. I often wonder if there are places like it else where.
I had my suspicions confirmed yesterday when I went to Love in NYC.
It was crazy.. it is just a door on a side street. The door man opens the door by a security card.
As I was going down the stairs I got to thinking that I felt like I was in Fraggle Rock.. then someone pointed everything out and mentioned the "Fraggle Rock" room to the right.. :)
It was dark and small - very intimate. They did not over crowd it and the temperature was nice and consistant all day. It is smaller than the zone. It was a good mix of Sonic and the Zone. It was in a basement like the Zone but nice like Sonic.
It opened at 2 or 3 but we did not arrive until 5 and stayed until 12:30ish.. The crowd was fun and I got the opportunity to meet some NYTA's.
On top of the great venue.. we were treated to the sounds of Sasha and DJ Three.. (apparently friends from back in the day).
My only complaint.. not a single mirror in the entire club. For those who know me.. :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:
All in all a fantastic experience.. One time for the UNDERGROUND.

Up until the last Eric Entrenna day at The Zone, I never really liked the Vinyl Junkies. The Vinyl Junkies played right after Entrenna, and boy did they ever change my opinion of them. Mostly everyone else had left, but I was really glad I stayed. As Jon said, their sound was super heavy, chuggy, and relentless - the sound that is so ing epic in The Zone.
They kept the crowd going after Entrenna, and the place was still pretty packed when I left in the late afternoon - a rarity at The Zone. I certainly hope they're playing after Entrenna again on May 13th. |
