REMIX 7
JUDGE 1
A promising start here in the intro, the sawtooth does it's job ok. The bassline slots in nicely under the track. That lead melody in the breakdown is in desparate need of some delay, it's far too static...it's actually ruining the track when it hits the main part. The track is a little limp here as well, drive is non existent, very 'dance floor clearing'. Hold on...the track just stops all of a sudden...not good at all. Too short.

Where did the rest of it go? It's way way way way way too short. Even the offspring of a midget & a Leprechaun would bully it for being so short. Really let down by this as it's hard to judge and a whole category is gone at least.

Sounds full enough.

Typical sounding melodic wise

JUDGE 1
Haha straight into it here...not much of an intro, but it sounds great...those rhodes are excellent...it's also the first track I've heard to have really good percs. Those swishes are excellent too. The drive is excellent too.
Hmmm not much of a transition into the breakdown, I'm starting to think that this remixer started the remix the day before! Breakdown is a little bare with just a sawtooth.
It comes together ok in the main section, the remixer has mixed it well, although that maybe isn't that impressive as there's very few melodic elements, the track is crying out for some pads!
The drive that was in the intro has all but disappeared...back to the outro, with those great sounding rhodes...hmm another very short track.
It's a shame for this one, as it started off very promising, then just went rather limp at the end.

comment: very nice use of a bit of acid, adds a subtle change to the simple melody. Mastering seems spot on, kick & percussion seems to sit with the track rather than sound out of place either too quiet or too loud. Nice effort, only real gripe would be the length is a tiny bit short for mixing out.
JUDGE 3
Creativity: 7
Plus for the intro and outro sequence.
Overall Sound: 8
The intro and outro of this track sounds extremely tight!
Melody: 5
Not much new to listen here, pretty basic lead sound, and melody.
Arrangment: 6
The track started really tight, but ended up pretty basic, and is very short as well. This one really had a winner potential.
But the execution of the main part was too weak unfortunately.

REMIX 9
JUDGE 1
A rather thumping kick here, not really my cup of tea...the remixer is bringing in a bassline with too much reverb on it. There are some very strange percs here too.
Soundforge is going into clip overload here, this remixer is pushing far too many loud sounds into his remix...the track is distorting like crazy...I'm trying to find some positives for this remix, I suppose some of the sounds are original, and the square lead is also good.
Overall it's way too loud and distorted, soundforge actually crashed twice trying to load the amount of clips in this track....

comment. doesn't work at all soundwise. The kick is too loud, the lead synth gives me the s & I've had to turn it down in volume 4 times already. Percussion has a kind of err on the side of lieb, without being exact, but it can't save the track I'm afraid.
JUDGE 3
Creativity: 7
Cool drums, crazy sounds
Overall Sound: 3
Extremely loud mix and clipping. with loads of sharp sounds

Not much interesting here. lead sounds muddy.

Thanks Judges and RickyM for organising.
Heres my take...
[Remix 9 - Daeus]
My remix 9.
I knew I wouldnt be getting a very high score as my tune got louder and louder throughout production until my new speakers blew up (I'm still getting used to proper EQ'ing) and sorry for crashing your soundforge Judge 1. Then I ran out of time and realised I hadnt even put the main Halycon melody in but I spent so much time on it I had to submit it even if it didnt get rated.
I enjoyed making it allot and even found I went off and a tangent with that wicked Bassline which inspired me to produce that random tune that comes in before I even touch the Halycon part lol.
I wanted to add an epic feel with the bongo sounds but needed more work on the perc in general I think.
I loved using part of the tune in a loop for buildup at 4:30 and I hope everybody liked the birds with the sweep for atmosphere.
Gotta love the birds.
Heres my take on the other tunes anyway.....
ANDREW ANDERSON REMIX 1
[Times Listened to during live review: 4 ]
Heh did I here an owl in this remix - gotta love the birds.
There's no engery in the bassline and the percs never changed after they get going.
The pad is massive and could be used with a driving synth to make ace.
At 6:00 the plucking is wicked, this should have been used to drive the entire tune, ashame its just at the end.
DER MYSTIK REMIX 2
[Times Listened to during live review: 3 ]
Nice hard kick, nice key at the start, quite a clicky bassline, oh man thats a nice bassline when it drops haha.
Quite a weak halycon bit in the background with tho but ill let that off for now.
Woh quite a big pad that comes in.
I love that whaling noise you hear twice before the main break buildup.
Still sounds good at 1:50 due to that amazing bassline I just let everything else off because of that.
Oh is that the tune finished (goes v quiet)..NO lol
Piano...NICE, with a choir...and nice pad, Piano still ace, some nice FX oh and a break..all sounds good.
The main synth sounds alright..abit weak again, amazing reverb but not much to it...nice take on the melody..this remixer has keyboard skills I think.
Not a bad buildup but could have been more hard-hitting ti then go back in to that wicked bassline.
TERRY BARKER REMIX 3
[Times Listened to during live review: 3 ]
Thought it was hard house at the beginning, fast start anyway with nice rough bassline.
Nice intro to the first sound of the Halycon Melody....Pad sounds nice fading in, pad sounds wicked just to emphasise that.
The first Halycon sound synth that came in stays the same as the pad builds up..I wish this could sound phatter to compliment the amazing Pad.
Woh, NICE pluck, spent allot of time trying to copy the original (thats a good thing). Pluck valve opens up as I hear another or the same amazing pad which also seems to open up.
Bassline kicks in again..I wish the pluck valve stayed more closed because it sounds abit weak now.
Nice into to percs before the tune breaks, the bassline makes the tune sound like its going at full steam when it breaks.
I think Judge 3 should have given more for creativity on the Pluck and Pads as they obviously had allot of effort put in.
ELDRITCH REMIX 4
[Times Listened to during live review: 6]
Nice clean start, the simple but effective synth at the beginning gets the tune going and then another classic synth over the top brings the tune up to speed along with a quiet ringing noise with a gates sound on top ready for the gated pad (which sounds ACE) i.e. loads going on already but still dosnt sound too busy.
So far this tune sounds perfect/commercial, yes it does very anjuna beaty with the low analogue keyboard strikes in the background.
Amazing warm sound that gets louder before the guitar comes in which, yes does sound abit weak, a massive reverb on this would make it way better.
The build up is pretty kool when the big synth comes in to shadow the guitar.
For me the beginning and the end are the best parts, the middle could be allot more powerfull.
Its full of techniques but it could have tried to experiment some more.
350FQ REMIX 5
[Times Listened to during live review: 4 ]
Interesting bassline and reverby synth.
Stops in to a very dark synth, very simple synths so far.
Stays the same pretty much throughout the rest.
The Bassline is REALLY cheeky and could have been made phatter to stand out and used to lead the rest of the sounds along.
YOU FALLEN ONES REMIX 6
[Times Listened to during live review: 3 ]
Tottally different start to the rest of the tunes..could have been made in Reason from the analogy feel.
After thinking it sounded to non-organic at 01:15 an amazingly atmospheric sound comes in with a pad.
The main tune synth sounds pretty good and I can hear another wobbly synth put in at the same time as it which sounds good, but could be made way more dreamy and the bassline that then comes in could be made way fatter.
Perc just dosnt make the tune take off sorry no marks for perc.
Then I hear another dreamy background synth come in with some echo on it.
Thats it then basically, theres some amazing sounds which could have been made stand out with better perc and basslines basically.
FABRIX EUROPA REMIX 7
[Times Listened to during live review: 10]
Nice beginning very clean, I like the warm key that fades in and out v quickley before the tune begins properly and its ashame it couldnt continue or something even though it makes an appearence again at the breaks, it could have been used as a wicked pad backing.
The FX are all really good when the snare comes in at 1:10.
Then when the main tune comes in I thought "cheap choir sound" but kept listening...its got this slightly wicked "wobble" in it which you would hear more if the note was held down longer...as the snare comes in this synth seems to get fatter and fatter..
I think this synth could be even fatter with bigger reverb.
TERRY BARKER REMIX 8
[Times Listened to during live review: 3 ]
Another different start, interesting keys at the begginning.
The bassline is pretty good but quiet.
Nice Anjuna style messing about with a low sounding key before the tune stops for the main melody...oh it just jumps straight in lol, the nice key stops very suddenly..as if the remixer couldnt wait to drop in that main synth that does sound pretty kool but not kool enough to stop everything for it.
WOH that synth that then comes in on top of the super saw is ACE. More reverb on that and itd just sound like heaven, on its own though without that damn supersaw we all know. haha thats a nice sound yea.
But im worried because nothing else is changing and... im right it just stays like this now for the rest of the tune.
Strange tune because of that amazing final synth that comes in over the super-saw and that strange sleepy key at the beginning. |

Hello, thanks for running this and providing feedback! Where can I download the other tracks to listen to?
Just a comment regarding my track's length - I don't see how 7:21 is way way too short for a trance track. There are plenty of tracks on trancemaster which are 6:30 to 7:30. Sure, some of them get up near the 10 minute mark (a few of mine have gone over 9 minutes - the track is as long as feels right to me). I don't understand that a track length of 7:21 is too short for a trance track, since a lot of great artists produce tracks shorter than that. Am I missing something? |

Wow, I never expected to win to be honest. I learned alot of things producing this remix. One of them being, I need to find my own style, lmao. :D
There were some really good remixes in this competition. My personal favorites being 3F05Q Darkside Remix and Terry Barker Remix. All of them are really cool though.
Thanks for a fantastic competition.
I can't wait to choose the track for the competiton next year. :) |

Freakin' A! 2nd Place!
Hey, that's huge for me. It's nice to know that I'm getting better at this. Looks like judge 4 just didn't like it, sad. As long as I'm making progress, it feels damn good. Hey hey, maybe it's time to think of a real artists name, instead of using my unpronouncable excuse of a forum handle.
Eldritch, if you didn't expect to win, then you need to start giving yourself more credit! The production was spot on. I expect to hear this on some internet radio...
Speaking of which, when's Schossow going to announce it, and where can I stream it online?
DERAIL, umm... your mix is 3:45. I don't know, but there seems to have been a mixup!!!
Unanimous Ricky? Judge 2 is my new friend! :D Who were the judges by the way, if that's okay to ask? (seems as Subtle is one, and thanks for the nice comments Subtle). Some nice feedback and critiques there, which are greatly appreciated.
RickyM, thanks for posting all of the results in such detail. Really nice to see some care taken. You have a PM, btw.
Cheers,
Alan |
