I actually have a 6mb line and it's been running at 5.4-5.8mb for quite soome time now. Anyways... the guy said 'it could be some 3rd party program in the back.' my question is there any software that checks through programs running in the backround that are leeching my internet speed? igottaknow run in safe mode with networking enabled. task manager will show you what services are running zonealarm firewall will show you what apps are using the internet. but chances are real problem is dsl sux. DSL is a ty connection. it has to go through a lot of wrapping and unwrapping because of the nature of the connection. get rid of it for a cable connection if you can. if not then your sol.
