Whitelabel means the track never got signed to any specific label at the time. So the artist might press his own vinly, perhaps a couple hundred of them, then release that to the general public (whitelabel)(bootleg). You'd normally find a whitelabel being released before being re-released on a major record label who has talked the artist into releasing it for oodles of cash.
Some people might refer to them as test pressings to see how well the record will sell. From there if the record sells, a major record label will market the whitelabel. Any example of this would be http://www.discogs.com/release/337422
Then again a whitelabel and a true one is one that will never be released due to conflicting issues between the people who made the track and the individuals who have rights to the music the artists used.
Examples of Leama & Moor
http://www.discogs.com/release/164520
http://www.discogs.com/release/284748
Also Hybrid has a few of these as well under their belt.

http://www.discogs.com/release/145997
http://www.discogs.com/release/283191 <-- This one never saw the light of day because Alanis Morissette was not letting hybrid release it.

At any rate I hope this gives you a general idea as to what a whitelabel is to some extent. |
