while we're on the subject on promoters.
I was in talks with a certain promoter here to play the an opening slot in the house stage for a 6000pax outdoor party sometime in june.
benny benassi will be headlining the night while the dj's before him and after me all play house / tech house.
here's the problem, i play full on psytrance.
i requested that i get a slot in the hard trance stage but unfortunately the local headliners for the hard trance stage are only letting dj's from their collectiv play with them.
so that left me with the breaks tent or the hip hop tent.
The breaks tent is already chock full of amazing talent and the hip hop tent is ..erm.. meh.
bottomline is ..
i turned down the gig and many many people are giving me for turning down such a big event. |

yeah.
i mean i could've just decided to play house since I used to anyway. I was booked under the impression i still played house but it's just not the sound i want to be pushing anymore. |

stay glued to the decks 'till you can phrase. its pretty easy actually. just cue your records and let go ONLY on the 1st beat of a phrase (meaning cue up the 1st beat of the phrase in the track you wanna mix and... AND let it go on the first beat of the phrase of the track thats already playing). you can normally tell what part of the phrase the ongoing track is at by listening to a few beats. there should be a crash or a distinct change in sound telling you a new one has started most of the times. |
Thats basic phrasing, but good phrasing is when the song breaks down and is replaced by beats from you're cued song in such a way that it sounds good. You can simulate this via volume/eqing but good phrasing is the difference between great djs and everyone else IMO |

Listen to the set I posted above.
I know what phrasing is, but I'm really having hard time doing it. It's just that, when I press play on the cued track - I have to re-sync the beats with the platter, which takes a few seconds. After that I have no choice, but to bring the cued track in at some random point. To summarize - I miss the first beat of a phrase. |

Doesn't matter if you miss the first beat of the phrase cause when you've got the beats back in line, they are still in phrase and then you just have to bring them in at the start of the next phrase.
I find all this talk about phrasing really weird cause when I first started djing many years ago, I completely understood the concept of phrasing way before I could beatmatch.
But then, some people have an ear for it some people rely on technical methods. |

don't listen to the guys who say don't do it
go play at this club
if you suck you suck but this opportunity may not be here when you are ready the next time
I agree with the dude who told you to practice beforehand though
Glue yourself to the decks
Good luck bro |

Yeah, you could have gone for it but if your hearts not in it then why do it? And playing full on Psytrance would have just been plain wrong for a warm up set for Benny B.
I have been on the same night as Bennassi. He's actually a really good DJ, but does drop some weird from time to time. I couldn't warm up for him. Our worlds are so far appart it's unreal. He plays a lot softer than I like. He couldn't even warm up for me if I was warming up for someone he he in terms of style that is. Nice guy though, you should talk to him if you get the chance.

well, you see, I understand the concept of phrasing. It's just that I can't really put it to work. |
