"O" in Anthem

I can't figure out what the word "O" means in a national anthem. As in

"O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,"
or
"O Canada!"

Any idea?

O, I dunno. Perhaps one could make a political argument out of it if they really try.

O, why not? Give it a go.......

At first I was confused... I feared that you (the posters in this thread excluding myself) had all come down simultaneously with Tonga fever.

Given your disparate geographic locations, the odds of this happening were slim, but thanks to SARS, modern air travel and movies like 12 monkeys, the hypothetical probability that this might occur was well above zero.

It wasn't till later that I realized there was method to your madness...

O bviously you are all using the word "O" in your sentences in an attempt to decipher its meaning.

In other words, by using it in multiple sentences, you are clothing it in multiple contexts. And in doing so you are mapping all the subtle nuances that this word imparts to a sentence.

"O" can't hide for long. Keep up the good work!
