finally making the move to the laptop format

| Hey everyone - I apologize in advance because I know somewhere this same question has been asked... I'm thinking about making the switch to either Serrato, Final Scratch, or another computer / software based mixing console (possibly even trying to get into Abelton...I'm also considering getting a nice new computer to run this program on (512 MB RAM upgradable to 1 GB- is this enough??). Anyway any help would be much appreciated! |

I think you should go with Serato, thats what all tells me anyway =)
And that RAM memory, i think you maybe should go with 1gb and up minimum..cant be wrong to have as much as possible i guess (serato running+maybe some recording software) takes alot of memory. |

| Ableton sucks up a lot of your computers juice so i'd reccomend 2bgs of ram. Especially if you plan to do any producing on it. 1gb for Serato should be plenty. |

if you are using software to just mix and are not running any other programs at the same time, 512MB is just fine
if you plan on doing more complicated things with it, then 1GB can't hurt
either way, unless you're financially restricted by $40 for the extra $512, just get the 1GB (2GB is just overkill for your purposes as far as I can tell) |

We'll, you really haven't mentioned much. You haven't said if you're going PC or Mac? That makes a HUGE difference. You haven't mentioned what's your software choice. Ableton vs Serato are two completely different animals. I use Serato and I love it. You should also look at the future. How long are you planning on keeping this computer? Do you plan to upgrade in a year? All those are variables you should look into.

To be honest, 'nice new computer' and '512 MB RAM' are pretty much mutually exclusive terms by now. 1 GB is pretty much standard baseline right now, and a lot of laptops come with 2 GB. As Woody mentioned, we need a lot more details. How much are you looking to spend? How long do you want this laptop to last? What else do you want to use it for? Etc.
As far as software goes, take a look at Torq as well. It's not as 'proven' as Serato, but in my experience so far it holds up really well, and even has a few things that Serato doesn't. It has a few shortcomings, but there's a major update coming within the next month or so (testing begins in the next couple weeks) that should address those issues. It really depends on what you want to do with the software, I suppose. There are a number of places both here and elsewhere where you can find in-depth DVS discussions and comparisons. |
