I have a pair of Resolv 80a from Samson.
I'm very satisfied with the results, but.. how can I be sure if my subbass is correct on my tracks?
I'm thinking about a Samson 120a SUB, but i'm not sure if it's true necessary.

I'm thinking so. I was used to working with my very bassy Technics home audio speakers, and I recently switched to Event ALP-5's. My last mixdown was so bass heavy that it was crazy, and I didn't realize it until I played it elsewhere. I've recently hooked those other speakers back up and I use them as a reference. |

I wouldnt use a sub woofer whilst producing. Maybe for listening back..... but definalty not while mixing down and producing. You want a true clean flat responce. The sub is designed to boost the bass so you wont get a true sound from it. :) |

I would suggest a really good pair of headphones from Byerdynamic or AKG.. It will help you hear a wider frequency range than the monitors.. I never produce with the monitors, i use my headphones while producing and the i do the final mixdown on the monitors! Just a tip..
Cheers

the only affordable small scale monitors i have heared that really do the deep bass well are the 'quested' 8 inch ones. and these are big compaired to the majority. and cost about 1300
usually mixing on a small set of monitors and getting a good sound will mean itll sound good on most systems, but to get the best bass performance in your track you have to have either very good large monitors or a correctly set up (and very good) subwoofer. unless you have big bucks then your outcome will be worse using a sub. but if you have the funds to do it right then a sub will let you know whats goin on down in the deepest bass regions. |

well going to have to disagree with you on this one... although the sub will mudden a few frequencies you're almost completely missing the 1st octave if you don't have one... |

A sub is very beneficial.
BUT, its not as easy as buying a sub and sticking it under your desk. Put simply, if you don't have bass traps in the corners of your room or don't know what a bass trap is, you should NOT buy a sub. Doing so will cause more harm than good in most cases (small room, no acoustic treatment, add a sub = death). |

Cmon richie! Most affordable 8" speakers are crap and have no midrange, you know that! I KNOW you do... :p
For home use, 6" monitors and a decent sub ftw. Next step is either a really elite set of 8"ers or a 3 way design ($$$). |

To answer the question:
Beneficial? Yes, if you know how to set them up
Must have? No |

the quested 8" coned monitors are great for overall sound! and they will kick the ass of a sub and 2x monitor package of the same cost. they got about 400wrms of british amplification per speaker! this allows the 8" to do its business in the mid dept
