(Redmond, USA) - Earlier we noted that game producer EA (electronic arts) launched a record label, as many people purchasing their games have an interest in one of many exclusively licensed tracks. Apparently the market for game music is hot potato, as software behemoth Microsoft has launched a competition for producers, both bedroom and pro, offering a selection of twelve game trailers that should be enriched with new, original music.

The competition ends on May 31st, and afterwards its up to the audience to vote for their favourites. Winners get a chance to record their composition in a Universal Music studio, and get an in-game spot, alongside other benefits.

Fact is that the market for games is surpassing the market for movies. More and more are (dance) artists invited for a game soundtrack, a phenomenon that started when iD software invited Nine Inch Nails for their first Quake Game roughly a decade back. The movement is further strengthened by the fact that game consoles are turning into entertainment centers, with Microsoft making forays in the market for movie downloads, after venturing into music.

The hunt for unknown talent aside, Redmond's Microsoft certainly knows how to score the works of some of the big guns. Roger Sanchez is revealing his exclusive XBOX 360 track this month, joining the likes of Scissor Sisters, Junkie XL among a host of others that have produced for the platform.

In order to partake in the competition, go to the XBOX 360 webpage. There are twelve trailers available, namely: Halo Wars, Viva Pinata, Blue Dragon, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, Fable 2,Tony Hawks Project 8, Pro Evolution Soccer 6, Forza 2, Tomb Raider, Too Human, Assassins Creed, Halo 3, pick the one you like and rock and roll!
