Gain ducking is where the volume of the mixer channel is reduced when the kick or whatever is triggered. A sidechained compressor activates a COMPRESSOR when the kick or whatever is triggered. They probably sound pretty much the same alot of the time, but with a compressor you're reducing the dynamics and not just the level. Hopefully that makes sense!

lol
yea makes sense, basically it sounds almost identical and half the time you can't tell if someone is using either one correct?

Weeeeeell!
A compressor gives you control over attack/release too, which I dont think the fruity peak controler has. So, in that sense, a sidechain can sound a lot different. But basically, the typical benni benassi sidechain think would sound similar using either method, it would just have more "pressure" using a sidechained compressor (lol). Try both and you'll see what I mean. It's a subtle difference, but I always prefer it.

Edit: you may be able to achieve the same effect by linking the "wetness" (?!) knob on a compressor to the peak controller.

Sidekick 3 doesn't work for me in Cubase 4. I am able to set it up correctly and get it to sidechain my bass. But the next time I load up the project the sidechaining is all wonky. :(

now eldritch will call you stupid :).

I stumbled across this one not too long ago, and it seems to have some great options built in. That, and it's really easy to set up in ableton when you use the sends to route the audio.

Hi Mates!
For Cubase users:

I have some good experience with th TC Native Bundle's Sidechaineer... it works pretty well :)
The only annoyng is that I must to re-enable the keys on each load.

Besides, TC Native Bundle is a very great combo!

Hmmm...with this sidechain thing - I've never been actually able to make it work. I know how to setup the sidechain properly in my sequencer, but what other things should be taken into consideration to make this work?

Does the bass pattern matter? If it's a syncopated bass line or a rolling type bass line, will it make a difference? Should the bass be compressed first and then have the sidechain compression on top or if you're sidechaining there should be no other compression on the bass track? What about the settings for the compressor? Surely they can't be the same as typical bass compression? So what are the suggested settings for attack, release, ratio and threshold when sidechaining? These settings never seem to be discussed in these sidechaining threads; only the actual setup of the sidechain is covered.
jey
if u know what attack etc all do then u can easily set them to suit ur bassline...

draw over 1 bar in ur sequencer and for example use a pad, set the kick to sidchain the pad, hit play and start turning knobs!

start with attack at 0.0

i find i have to boost the volume of my signal more than my kick to get a good effect going...
