Driver support is very spotty for 64 bit operating systems. You may want to verify that any drivers you have for your studio equipment is 64 bit. You cannot use a 32 bit dirver on a 64 bit operating system.
In addition you'll have to make sure that your DAW software will also run on a 64 bit OS.
Personally, I don't see 64 bit proliferation for a few years in the studio space. |

| There is absolutely, positively, no reason whatsoever to start using Windows XP x64 right now. It's an ad-hoc update to Windows XP, isn't all that stable and driver support sucks. Vista, on the other hand, has x64 support baked right in. I don't think Vista is a good choice for production right now either, but for anyone who does want to take advantage of x64 I highly suggest waiting until Vista is stable and then upgrading. |

I hated 64 bit when I had an AMD64, drivers were , I had to use beta drivers for my sound card. Little to no support for basically anything. Windows basically went into bitch mode every few months and required formats.
Now I have core2duo. And I love it. |

Depends on your configuration.
A: 64bit processor
B: Motherboard that has a recent chipset that likes 64bit processors
C: (MOST IMPORTANT) AUDIO HARDWARE THAT HAS 64BIT DRIVERS
D: A DAW that takes advantage of 64 bit (e.g. Cubase, Sonar, etc).
ProTools is currently a no-go for 64 bit, AS IS THEIR HARDWARE.
Which is breaking my balls, since I wanted to use Cubase 4 with my Mbox2 on my friends Quad-Core-Intel using Windows XP x64. But, like digi pointed out, XP64 isn't a great choice, and vista isn't quite stable enough to get approval from us audio geeks, and the professional audio world--- yet.
It sucks to find out there's no 64bit drivers for your audio hardware.
So again.
POINT C IS UUUUBERRR IMPORTANT
As for your 32bit applications? No big worries usually. Most 32 bit stuff will run in 64 bit land, just not the other way around.
